Four Surprise Fixtures That Could Take Place Next Season

As we approach the end of the footballing season across the EFL and with the promotion and relegation places starting to settle, we will be going through some potential surprise fixtures that could take place next season.

With some potential surprises on the cards which could lead to some of England’s biggest teams being relegated or some underdogs being promoted to the next tier.

Tottenham Hotspur v Lincoln City (Championship)

Arguably the biggest surprise of them all would be Tottenham getting relegated from the Premier League.

The London-based side are four points off the relegation zone and haven’t won in the league since 28th December, even with new manager Igor Tudor – he has lost his first two games.

Spurs haven’t found themselves in the second tier since the 1977/78 season and have continued to to become an established Premier League side, as well as reaching the Champions League final in 2018/19.

Lincoln find themselves 2nd in League One under Michael Skubala, one point behind league-leaders Cardiff City before they meet in the next game.

They find themselves ten points clear of third placed Bolton Wanderers and were in the National League as recently as the 2016/17 season.

West Ham United v Bradford City (Championship)

It would come as a surprise within English football if West Ham were to be relegated to the Championship – but there is a high likelihood of this happening with them being two points from safety.

West Ham found themselves in the Europa League two years ago and haven’t been in the second tier since the 2011/12 season – if West Ham were to go down, they would see lots of key players leave as well as the financial repercussions from this.

Bradford City found themselves in League Two last season and now have a good chance to make the League One playoffs and reach the second tier for the first time since the 2003/04 season.

The two sides haven’t met since that season where Bradford got relegated to the third tier under Bryan Robson primarily as they had been on a downhill spiral since that relegation.

Leicester City v Bromley FC (League One)

The Foxes find themselves at serious risk of being relegated to the third tier of English football, just ten years on from their surprise Premier League title win.

After relegation from the Premier League last season and a difficult return to the life in championship as well as a six-point deduction has left them 22nd in the Championship, albeit just one point from safety.

With one win in 2026 so far in 11 attempts in the Championship, it has dragged them straight into the relegation battle along with West Brom who sit just above the drop.

On the other hand, Bromley surprisingly sit at the top of League Two – clear by four points of second place Cambridge and six points clear of 4th place Swindon Town who sit just outside the automatic places.

In the 2015/16 season, it was Bromley’s first season up in the National League following their promotion from the National League North – five tiers below Leicester at the time.

Rotherham United v York City (League Two)

With Matt Hamshaw’s Rotherham United side sat in 23rd with three league wins in 18 games, they find themselves looking likely to head down to League Two for the first time since the 2012/13 season.

However, despite this bad run of form – they find themselves only three points from safety with a game in hand against Mansfield on Tuesday night.

On the other hand, North Yorkshire side York City are in with a high chance of achieving promotion back to the Football League since 2015/16 and could meet with South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham for the first time since 2013.

They sit one point ahead of title rivals Rochdale, although having played a game more – The Minstermen have won their last nine games and haven’t lost in the league since 1st October.
