According to reports, former manager David Wagner is in line for a sensational return to West Yorkshire, with the club tipped to reappoint the German at the helm.
Wagner has been out of work since being sacked by Championship side Norwich City in 2024, after failing to push the Canaries up the table and into a play-off race.
The now 53-year-old first joined the team in 2015, then in the Champiosnhip, taking over from Chris Powell. At the time, Wagner’s only experience was managing Borussia Dortmund’s second team.
In his first pre-season, the German brought in 10 players, including favourites Danny Ward and Aaron Mooy. After a positive start to the 2016/17 season began to climb the table. They would be a shock inclusion in the play-offs, eventually going all the way and securing a place in the Premier League.
Under Wagner, Huddersfield continued to overachieve, surviving in the top-flight at the first time of asking.
In 2018/19 the bubble would burst, with Wagner being sacked before the club was eventually relegated.
Getting Wagner to return would be a massive coup for Huddersfield. The German has only managed in the third tier of any nation once, and that was in his first job prior to his original success in West Yorkshire.
Huddersfield are at a crossroads after failing to secure a return the Championship first time round. The club have released a total of 10 first team players as they look to reinvent themselves and rebuild their squad.
Top scorer Josh Koroma, alongside club captain Jonathan Hogg are among the big names leaving the club.
Whilst Wagner is at the top of the sides wish list, it is uncertain whether the feeling of a reunion is mutual, but with reports growing, it appears he could be the man to lead Huddersfield forward.
