Gillingham are closing in on the signing of Newport County midfielder Cameron Antwi, with sources telling The Lower Tiers that the 24-year-old is scheduled to undergo his medical today.
The Gills have moved decisively to secure Antwi’s signature, beating off stiff competition from several League One and League Two clubs who were prepared to wait until his Newport contract expired later in the summer. Gillingham’s proactive approach has put them firmly in pole position, offering Antwi guaranteed EFL football beyond this season.
Currently sitting 14th in League Two, Gillingham see Cameron Antwi as a key addition as they look to build stability and push up the table. In contrast, Newport County remain bottom of the division and locked in a battle for survival, a situation that has inevitably influenced Antwi’s decision-making.
Antwi has enjoyed the best season of his career with Newport, scoring five goals in 28 appearances and becoming a central figure in midfield. Comfortable as a box-to-box midfielder and capable of operating in a deeper holding role when required, his versatility and improved end product have attracted widespread attention across the EFL.
His rise has been hard-earned. After coming through Fulham’s academy, Antwi joined Blackpool in 2019 and turned professional a year later. Loan spells at AFC Telford United and Southport failed to ignite his career, and he was released by Blackpool in 2022. A move to Cardiff City followed, but a serious knee injury limited his impact despite the club extending his contract.
A permanent switch to Newport County gave Antwi the platform he needed to finally establish himself, and his performances this season have underlined that potential.
With a medical imminent, Gillingham now appear set to land one of League Two’s most improved midfielders — a deal that could prove shrewd business as Antwi enters what should be the prime years of his career.
