Gillingham FC

Gillingham currently sit in the middle of the table in EFL League Two so far this campaign, with them positioned 14th on 41 points.

Now, with the remainder of the season coming up, Gillingham will be looking to climb up the table and potentially avoid relegation within the remainder of the season.

Ahead of their next fixture against Oldham Athletic on the 21st of February, we sat down with Gills In The Blood to talk all things Gills in a Gillingham FC interview.

Before we start, we would like to thank Gillingham fan Gills In The Blood for taking part in this Gillingham FC interview. His responses were informative and aim to give you an insight into Gillingham as a club currently.

The Gillingham Interview

Gillingham currently sits 14th in the league. How do you feel your team has performed so far this season?

“As per the last couple of seasons in this division, we started really well before having a massive wobble in the autumn.

“Three wins in the last five gives cause for optimism, but we’ll need to be a lot more consistent if we want to get anywhere near the play-off places.”

Compared to your feelings before the season started, would you say your thoughts now are more positive or negative?

“I’ve tried to remain level-headed about things throughout, given we were told of a two-year plan when Gareth Ainsworth was appointed last March.

“Of course, it’s disappointing to be in the bottom half after such an encouraging start, but I do still think we are going in the right direction.”

Who would you say has been your best player so far this campaign?

“I think a few have been generally consistent, the likes Remeao Hutton, Max Clark & Ethan Coleman, to name some.

“However, it has to be Bradley Dack, who, after years of injury hell, has looked back to the best version of what he can be after two ACL reconstructions. He has played the majority of games & is a cut above the level with seven goals & an assist to his name so far.”

Who has surprised you the most this season, and why?

“Probably Josh Andrews in terms of the amount of games and minutes he’s managed to play.

“Having barely featured for 18 months since joining, it’s great to see him put a consistent block of matches together, but the trick now is adding more consistency and ultimately goals to his game.”

How do you feel your team has performed in cup competitions this season?

“We went out in the first round of each competition we entered (albeit we were unlucky against Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup), so I’ll just leave it at that.”

Do you think your manager, Gareth Ainsworth, has done a good job this season, and why?

“On the whole, yes. We have added more goals to our game while still remaining fairly difficult to beat, but he now needs to find ways to turn some draws into wins if we are to challenge the top seven.”

Have your owners supported your team enough this season?

“Absolutely, they have, and that’s been the case since day one.

“Given where we were in the league in January and with plenty of players out of contract at the end of the season, they could have waited until the summer, but they’ve allowed us to bring in three additions, with one of those being for a fairly substantial fee.”

Which position has been the most beneficial to your side this season?

“I would have to say either attacking midfield where Bradley Dack (seven goals, one assist) plays, or at full back where Remeao Hutton & Max Clark have combined to the tune of three goals & 10 assists between them so far.”

Which position do you feel has held your team back the most this campaign?

“Our strikers still haven’t found the net often enough to mount a sustained challenge at the top end of the table, but with pretty much everyone fit, and the arrival of Ronan Hale (two goals in three games), let’s hope they can notch a few between now & the end of the campaign.”

What do you believe to be a realistic aspiration for your team in the closing stages of the season?

“I’ve said all along that, given the two-year plan and last season’s 17th placed finish, top half would be progress, top ten would be a good season & anything else would essentially be a bonus.”
