How Many Points Will Be Required To Avoid Championship Relegation?

As we approach the end of the season, the Championship relegation battle looks set for an ultimate blockbuster ending with five sides fighting to avoid the drop to League One.

Usually, most teams look to set their aims on 50 points at the start of the season – typically this is the key number to avoid relegation, but it has happened before.

Birmingham City were the last side to be relegated with 50 points in the 2023/24 season but this season has the potential to create more drama than ever before.

QPR With Nothing To Play For

QPR are currently sat on 50 points in 16th place, but with two wins in eight – a slight chance of relegation is still lingering with those at the bottom sat between 38 and 42 points.

With eight games remaining, it is extremely unlikely for the London-based side to get relegated and have shown at times they are more than capable of creating a good performance.

R’s manager Julien Stephan said: “I don’t think 50 points is enough, I think we need more – probably two or three more [points] to be sure.

“My answer could be different if Oxford or West Brom lost their last games, but this was not the case, we need one more win.

“After that, we will have 52 or 53 and the next challenge is to have to the most possible points at the end of the season.

Predicted Championship Table

52 or 53 points will be the ideal finishing total for those teams at the bottom of the league to avoid any possibility of relegation to League One.

This shows QPR to pick up at least another nine points this season so any threat of relegation would be quickly erradicated.

Former Premier League champions Leicester City have been predicted to stay in the division by just one singular point, a big moment in the club’s future.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of what happens across the next eight/nine games in this incredible Championship relegation battle, it is going to cause drama, tension, and a proper blockbuster showdown as five teams look to avoid the drop with Sheffield Wednesday.

53 points will secure safety, how many will have the nerve and bottle to get anywhere near this landslide total in the battle of the giants?
