Hull City are reportedly in advanced discussions with Liverpool over a loan move for winger Lewis Koumas after the 20-year-old returned to Anfield from Birmingham City.

Koumas’ loan in the Midlands was cut short after he featured 25 times across league and cup competitions, scoring once in a 3-2 win over Championship leaders Coventry City at the start of the month.

Limited to just nine league starts, the Wales international saw his spell ended as Liverpool looked to assess his next step.

Initially, he had been expected to return to Anfield in early January, but injuries at Birmingham and his goal against Coventry extended his run in the starting XI.

Liverpool, Birmingham, and Koumas agreed to extend the recall window beyond January 15, allowing him to complete the first half of the season with the Blues.

Birmingham have since strengthened their wide options, signing Ibrahim Osman on loan from Brighton and pursuing other wingers, effectively clearing the way for Koumas’ return.

Championship Experience

Hull City were among several clubs to target Koumas during the summer transfer window, but the deal fell through and he ultimately joined Birmingham.

He was also monitored by Sheffield United as they reshaped under Ruben Selles, highlighting the wider interest in the young winger.

Now, Hull appear to be leading the race for his signature, though outgoing transfers may be required before the EFL can ratify the loan.

Another arrival before the window closes at 7pm next Monday cannot yet be ruled out.

Although Koumas is yet to feature in the Premier League, he has significant Championship experience. He spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Stoke City, making 49 appearances, scoring six goals, and providing three assists.

Across both Stoke and Birmingham spells, he has amassed 66 Championship appearances, demonstrating his ability to perform consistently in England’s second tier.

The 20-year-old also has nine senior caps for Wales, giving him valuable international experience at a young age.

Hull City Squad Moves

Hull have been active in the transfer market in recent days. Yu Hirakawa and Kieran Dowell both featured in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Swansea City, marking the Tigers’ third consecutive victory and keeping them fourth in the Championship.

Sources indicate that deals for Paddy McNair and Toby Collyer are complete, with official announcements expected later this week. Another signing is still possible, while Hull continues to work on sanctioning exits to free up space in the squad.

Head coach Sergej Jakirović has previously praised Koumas, telling Hull Live:

“Koumas is a very good player, a young player, with big potential, so we will see. We will see what will happen in the future.”

A loan move to Hull could give Koumas the regular minutes he missed at Birmingham while providing the Tigers with a versatile attacking option as they push for promotion in the second half of the season.

With talks reportedly advanced, a deal could be completed before the transfer window closes, giving both Hull and Koumas a timely opportunity to strengthen their respective campaigns.

The winger’s combination of Championship experience, youthful potential, and international exposure makes him an ideal addition for a Tigers squad seeking consistency and attacking flair.
