Ipswich Town: Szmodics Offers, Azon Headache & Mehmeti’s Full Debut Assessed

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna explains why Sammie Szmodics was left out, confirms Ivan Azon was subbed due to a “really bad headache”, and gives a positive assessment of Anis Mehmeti’s full debut.

Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna addressed three major talking points after the draw with Preston: Sammie Szmodics’ absence, Ivan Azon’s half‑time withdrawal, and Anis Mehmeti’s first full start.

His explanations offered clarity at a key moment in the window.

Szmodics: Offers Received, None Accepted

Sammie Szmodics was left out of the matchday squad entirely, with McKenna confirming the situation remains active.

“There’s not too much change from what we said yesterday. There have been some offers, but nothing that the club sees as acceptable. If that doesn’t change, he’ll be here come Tuesday.

He added that the decision to omit him was influenced by the wider context:

“But we thought, in the light of that and a few other things, it was better to go with the other players today.

Ipswich Town remain firm on valuation and will not move unless a bid meets their terms.

Azon Subbed Due to “A Really Bad Headache”

Ivan Azon started up front but was replaced at the break by George Hirst. McKenna dismissed any injury fears, explaining the change was purely health‑related. “He had a really bad headache.

The staff made the call at half‑time to avoid aggravating the issue, with no suggestion of a longer‑term concern.

Mehmeti’s Full Debut: Encouraging Signs

McKenna was positive about Anis Mehmeti’s first full start for the club.

“I thought it was a positive. It’s never easy coming into a new team and in the context of a game like that when there’s not loads of space for you to operate.

He highlighted two standout moments:

“There was a lovely pass for Jack Clarke in the first half and a lovely pass for George Hirst in the second half – two of our clearest chances.

McKenna also praised his work out of possession:

“I thought his counter‑pressure was really, really good as well. He’s going to bring us good things, and I’m sure he’ll only improve as well.
