Ipswich Town Youngster Disqualified From CONCACAF U20 Championship

Ipswich Town defender Walker Shabazz-Edwards has seen his Guyana U20S side disqualified from the CONCACAF U20 Championship qualifiers after a mass brawl forced their match against Anguilla to be abandoned.

Guyana were cruising 5–0 when an 85th‑minute red card for an Anguilla player sparked a chaotic confrontation involving several members of both teams.

Match Abandoned After Violent Confrontation

The game descended into chaos in the 85th minute when an Anguilla player was sent off, sparking a punch‑up involving multiple members of both teams.

While the melee unfolded, Shabazz-Edwards notably stayed away from the confrontation, avoiding any involvement.

Once order was restored, the referee issued four red cards to Anguilla and three to Guyana, adding to the initial dismissal.

With Anguilla reduced below the minimum number of players required, the match could not continue.

CONCACAF Ruling and Sanctions

Following a disciplinary review, CONCACAF confirmed the match as a 5–0 forfeit win for Guyana, but also took the significant step of disqualifying both teams from the remainder of the qualification tournament.

Their remaining fixtures will now be recorded as 3–0 forfeits in favour of their scheduled opponents, with both federations also receiving undisclosed fines for their part in the incident.

The disciplinary committee issued four‑match suspensions to nine players involved in the fracas, naming five from Anguilla and four from Guyana.

The governing body stated that the decision was made in accordance with the competition’s disciplinary code and the evidence gathered during the investigation, emphasising the need to uphold tournament integrity.

Shabazz-Edwards’ International Milestone

The incident overshadowed what had been a landmark moment for Shabazz‑Edwards, who earlier in the week became the first Ipswich player ever to represent Guyana at any level.

The 18‑year‑old centre‑half started in their opening 3–2 defeat to hosts Curaçao, marking a significant milestone in his rapid development.

Standing at 6ft 4in, Shabazz‑Edwards joined Town last season from Brightlingsea Regent after impressing on trial.

His international debut remains a positive personal achievement despite the dramatic end to Guyana’s qualifying campaign.
