Luton Town Show Interest In Former Newcastle United Defender

Luton Town are reportedly showing interest in former Newcastle Defender Jamal Lewis, with The Hatters preparing replacement options as they expect to lose Alfie Doughty this summer, reports Alan Nixon.

Lewis, who was a product of the Norwich City Youth Academy, hasn’t really had a massive playing chance with a permanent outfit over the last few seasons. The Northern Irishman most recently enjoyed a strong loan spell with Watford, but that came in the 2023/2024 season, which was the last time we really got to see anything special from him.

Luton are believed to be keen on Lewis to fill the void that is expected to come, as after back-to-back relegations, The Hatters prepare to lose Alfie Doughty in their left wing-back position this summer. However, what could we see from the 27-year-old defender if he joins The Hatters?

What Can Jamal Lewis Bring To Kenilworth Road?

Luton know they’ll need a very similar kind of player to Alfie Doughty as the replacement. Lewis certainly shows attributes that he can be that player, with high success rates across the board in passing and crossing (through FotMob), especially his 82.4% success rate on the passing front with Watford back in the 2023/2024 campaign.

Alongside his successes on the passing front, defensive attributes are another thing that Lewis may bring to Kenilworth Road, with his seniority and experience across many EFL matches, and also his impressive recovery numbers showing just how good of a complete wing-back the Northern Ireland man truly is.

Should Luton Go All Out To Sign Lewis?

With the qualities and experience across the EFL stage that the 27-year-old would bring to Matt Bloomfield’s side, it makes perfect sense that Luton should try everything in the book to sign Jamal Lewis ahead of the expected departure of Alfie Doughty this window.

Lewis is available for nothing this summer, as he departed Newcastle at the end of his contract, meaning that it’s a pretty low-risk deal that could reap back very high-rewards for The Hatters as they look to push toward the peak of the League One Table this season.

However, what do you think about this? Would Lewis be the right fit for Luton, or should Matt Bloomfield’s side be looking elsewhere to replace Alfie Doughty’s LWB position this transfer window? Let us know what you think down in the comments below.
