Notts County have made a dream a reality for Nottingham-born goalkeeper James Belshaw, completing his signing from Harrogate Town for an undisclosed fee.

Belshaw has signed an 18-month contract at Meadow Lane, fulfilling a lifelong ambition to play for his hometown club.

Belshaw grew up in Nottingham and has long had a connection to football in the area.

His talent between the posts was nurtured from a young age, and he spent time in the Notts County and Walsall academies before moving into senior football.

He also played for Heanor Town, further developing his skills and gaining valuable match experience.

After impressing at youth level, Belshaw took his talents to the United States, earning a scholarship at Duke University, where he made 78 appearances for the Blue Devils.

In 2013, he was selected by MLS side Chicago Fire in the MLS Supplemental Draft, but he chose not to sign a first-team contract and instead returned to England to continue his career.

Back in the UK, Belshaw played for Nuneaton Borough and Tamworth, gaining experience in non-league football before joining Harrogate Town in 2017.

During his time at Harrogate, he was an important part of the squad that achieved promotion from the National League North to the National League, and later into League Two, helping establish the club in the Football League.

Ahead of the 2021–22 League Two season, James Belshaw signed for Bristol Rovers, where he played a key role as the Gas secured promotion to League One.

He was recognized as the club’s Player of the Year for his performances. He later returned to Harrogate Town, where he has remained a consistent and reliable presence in goal.

Director of Football Richard Montague said: “As well as an obvious passion for the club, James brings vast experience and an impressive track record of winning promotions.

“He’s been a very consistent performer over the course of his more than 200 EFL appearances and has been a hugely popular figure everywhere he’s played, which reflects his character and professionalism.

“This move will obviously mean a lot to him and his family and we’re delighted to help make his dream of playing for Notts a reality.”

Belshaw’s move to Meadow Lane brings experience, leadership, and local pride to the club.

For a player who has built his career across multiple leagues and countries, joining Notts County represents the culmination of years of dedication and hard work.

Fans can now look forward to seeing a familiar and respected figure between the sticks for the Magpies.
