EXCLUSIVE: James Bree Is ‘VERY’ Close to Joining Charlton on Loan

Charlton Athletic are on the brink of sealing a move for Southampton defender James Bree, with an announcement expected before the transfer window closes this evening. The Lower Tiers understands that negotiations are now at an advanced stage, and confirmation of the deal is imminent.

Reports earlier today suggested that Charlton were closing in on the 27-year-old, and Nathan Jones looks set to reunite with a player he knows well. The Addicks boss is eager to bolster his defensive options before the 7pm deadline, and Bree fits the profile perfectly. According to a source close to the player, the deal to bring the right-back to The Valley is now more or less agreed.

James Bree has endured a frustrating campaign at St Mary’s under Will Still, failing to make a single appearance so far this season. The recent arrival of former Denmark international Elias Jelert has pushed the ex-Luton Town defender even further down the pecking order, effectively opening the door for a late move away. Jelert’s signing provides Southampton with more than enough cover in defence, paving the way for Bree to depart.

With James Bree entering the final year of his contract, the nature of Charlton’s move remains to be confirmed. While the current arrangement is expected to be a loan, the Saints’ willingness to move him on permanently cannot be ruled out, given his contractual situation.

If the deal goes through, it will mark the third occasion Nathan Jones has secured James Bree’s services. The defender first linked up with the Welshman at Luton Town following his exit from Aston Villa, before reuniting again when Jones was appointed at Southampton. Now, another reunion at Charlton appears just hours away.

This potential addition could prove a smart piece of business for the Addicks as they strengthen for the campaign ahead.
