John Eustace marked a significant early milestone in his tenure at Derby County as his side came from behind to defeat Blackburn Rovers 3–1 on Saturday lunchtime, the first time his team have won after conceding first since he took charge.
It was a result shaped by resilience, tactical adjustment, and growing belief, as the Rams overturned a first-half deficit with a commanding second-half display.
The visitors showed attacking intent early and nearly broke through before the interval. Goalkeeper Josh Vickers was called into action in the 42nd minute when Yuri Ribeiro surged forward and fired toward the near post, forcing a sharp diving save.
Blackburn’s pressure paid off moments later. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Hayden Carter rose highest to meet Ribeiro’s in-swinging free-kick and powered a header beyond Vickers to hand the away side a deserved lead at the break.
Derby emerged after the restart with noticeably greater urgency. Patrick Agyemang threatened early with a curling effort that drifted just wide, signalling the hosts’ intent to shift momentum.
Former Blackburn player Sammie Szmodics was the next to go close with an effort struck from distance, but Carter’s sliding challenge disrupted the shot and diverted it off target.
The equaliser arrived in the 55th minute through a move that reflected Derby’s renewed confidence.
Ben Brereton Díaz initiated the attack, combining neatly with Agyemang before Derry Murkin returned the ball into his path for a composed finish inside the area.
Substitute Rhian Brewster injected immediate energy, and Joe Ward came close to completing the turnaround when his half-volley flashed inches past the post.
Derby’s second goal came via a cleverly rehearsed free-kick routine. Brewster’s deep delivery caused confusion at the back post, Szmodics recycled possession, and Clarke bundled home from close range to give the Rams the lead.
Nine minutes later, the contest was effectively settled. Bobby Clark released Murkin down the flank, and his cross found Brewster, who rose to head in Derby’s third and cap a clinical turnaround.
Beyond the three points, the victory represented a psychological breakthrough for Eustace.
Securing his first win after conceding first demonstrated a developing resilience and tactical maturity that he has consistently stressed since his arrival.
The second-half performance showcased composure, organisation, and attacking cohesion, offering perhaps the clearest indication yet that his methods are beginning to take hold at Pride Park.
