Bristol Rovers Coach Officially Joins Huddersfield Town

Bristol Rovers have announced that a coach has left the Gas to join Huddersfield Town with Jon Stead also joining him.

Bristol Rovers have announced Rhys Carr has resigned as men’s first team assistant head coach whilst Huddersfield Town have announced that Jon Stead will become a member of the backroom staff at the Terriers.

The duo joined the club in June 2025, they oversaw the dismal run the club has endured. losing 20, drawing two and winning 11 in all competitions.

They joined with ex-manager and club legend Darrell Clarke at the helm after the club axed Clarke in December

Rhys Carr’s career

Carr spent much of his football career playing in the Welsh top division before turning to coaching at the end of his career.

He took coaching roles in the West County with Swansea City, Cardiff City, and Bristol City. He spent half a century at the Robins before moving to Sheffield United.

At the beginning of 2022, Carr joined Bristol Rovers as U18 and U21’s coach, before leaving in the summer for Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he came a development coach.

In 2024 he became part of Mark Robins backroom staff along George Boateng.

He took interim control of Coventry City, after Robins was dismissed. Overseeing two draws and a loss before Frank Lampard came in. He left as Lampard began to take in his own staff.

John Stead’s career

Stead’s career started at the Huddersfield academy before playing for a wealth of clubs across the EFL, including Bristol Rovers rivals, Bristol City where he scored 20 times in 80 appearances.

The Yorkshire-man played more than 600 times across the leagues scoring 143 goals over the course of his career.

Stead started off his coaching career in the USA, coaching Hartford Athletic and Tampa Bay Rowdies. He returned to England to coach at Barnsley in 2023.

He reunited with Darrell Clarke at Bristol Rovers who he had coached with during Clarkes time at Barnsley. However he was sacked with Clarke in December.  

He now joins Huddersfield who are in 6th position in League One, occupying the final playoff spot.

The Terriers recently appointed Liam Manning as head coach after Norwich City had dismissed him.

Under Manning, Huddersfield have won two in two, both 1-0 wins against Bradford City and Luton Town at home.
