Newport County have confirmed the signing of Grimsby goalkeeper Jordan Wright on a free transfer, as The Exiles add further to their shot-stopping options with the signing of the 26-year-old.
Wright is believed to fit the bill of what Newport are looking for in-between the sticks, as the goalkeeper managed to help Grimsby edge towards the play-offs last season, despite eventually falling short of that goal. Wright is expected to help Newport massively moving forwards, looking like the perfect fit for The Exiles…
What Can Jordan Wright Bring To Wales?
Following the departure of long-serving club legend Nick Townsend, Newport knew they had to make a vast investment into the goalkeeping area of their side this summer window. Nik Tzanev is set to sign in at Rodney Parade too in the coming days, as, alongside Wright, The Exiles add quality in-between the posts.
The English goalie has some brilliant aspects to his game which could make him a future star for his new side Newport. Through FotMob statistics, Wright managed to act significantly well in a sweeping role, which is something Newport also like to implement, as well as fantastic track record with penalties.
While his passing charts aren’t the best, Wright could bring some much needed EFL experience but also a slightly younger pedigree of goalkeeping experience to Wales, and it could also provide Newport with some ambition to really kick on and push for a promotion chase next year…
Where Does Wright departure leave Grimsby?
Losing Jordan Wright after just the one season is not ideal at all for Grimsby, but it’s not a cause for immediate concerns, with further options still at Blundell Park to chose from next season.
However, considering Wright was made available for transfer this summer, this move can be seen to be expected.
Sebastian Auton could bring the goalkeeping qualities required in-between the posts that Grimsby might be looking for in replacement for the departing Wright, but there is also a good chance that David Artell’s side may look away from Blundell Park for a fresh start in goal.
Wright was a pretty essential piece to Grimsby last season as they made their sudden burst toward the play-off spots, with his departure set to be a loss that could cause a small reshuffle in the goalkeeping department, with The Mariners needing to organise for next season.
It is looking exciting as to what he may bring to Newport in his latest move, with plans to help The Exiles climb the League Two Table and also wonderful parts of his game that could be brought along with him to Rodney Parade.
What do you think, though? Is losing Wright a big miss for Grimsby, and is he going to deliver for Newport? Let us know in the comments below.
