Key Lincoln City Defender To Depart Club In January Window

Lincoln City are set for a key departure in their backline with a former Imps manager interested in the centre-half.

Lincoln City defender Lewis Montsma could be set to leave the club this week, with a reunion with a former manager on the cards.

The Dutch defender hasn’t played a league minute this season for Lincoln. And after returning from long‑term injury, with the arrival of Deji Elerewe has only pushed him further down the depth chart.

Shrewsbury Town, managed by former Imps boss Michael Appleton, are weighing up a deal to reunite with a player he originally brought to England. This move, driven by their need to fix a fragile back line that has been leaking goals and sliding toward the bottom of League Two.

Next Steps

The ball is very much in Shrewsbury’s court. They’ve shown interest, Appleton knows the player well, and their defensive situation is desperate enough that Montsma is a logical target. But until they decide whether to turn that interest into a concrete offer, Lincoln City are simply waiting. There’s no pressure on the Imps to force anything.

Montsma isn’t in the matchday plans, Elerewe has arrived, and the club is covered at centre‑back.

If Shrewsbury do firm up their interest, the next step would be a formal approach, which Lincoln would almost certainly entertain. Not because they’re pushing him out, but because the pathway back into the team isn’t there for him anymore.

The move would likely be a permanent. With Montsma out of contract in the summer, and not playing a league minute this season. Furthermore, The Imps have already moved to refresh the centre‑back group with Elerewe.

Loaning him out for a few months wouldn’t change his standing at Lincoln City, and it wouldn’t protect any long‑term value because he’s approaching the end of his deal. A permanent move (even a low‑fee or incentive‑based on) is cleaner for everyone involved.

It gives Montsma a fresh start, gives Shrewsbury a player they can build around rather than borrow, and allows Lincoln to tidy up the squad without carrying a contract that isn’t part of the future.

A move would suit the player, and it would tidy up the squad for Lincoln heading into the run‑in.
