League One side Wigan Athletic have been confirmed as up-for-sale by current owner Mike Danson – who rescued the club in 2023 after years of suffering, from relegations to financial instability.
Danson is a multimillionaire and he also owns Wigan Warriors Rugby Club as well as owning The Brick Community Stadium – where both teams play.
It was always seen that he saved and owned the club not from a financial perspective but as a way of saving the community from losing a big footballing side from the local area.
Wigan Athletic have become a stable League One side again under the watch of Mike Danson but have struggled on the pitch this season and find themselves 19th after sacking Ryan Lowe and are two points above the drop zone.
Despite the on-field struggles this season, Wigan still have a sellable story. In the 2024/25 season they sold academy players for a combined £7.6million. They are located in between Manchester and Liverpool so could attract some fans from the big clubs in Manchester and Merseyside.
And of course they managed to win the FA Cup in 2013 in the massive underdog story against Manchester City and have spent several years in the top flight up until 2013.
There is no known price for how much it would cost a prospective buyer to purchase Wigan Athletic – but it is thought to have been less than the £10million mark.
However, owner Danson is also willing to stay in and around the club as a minority partner as they look to rebuild back up the leagues but is looking for someone to join him in a financial sense as well as personal time will have been low for him since the move – owning the football and rugby club is hard work.
