The fans that attend games, of their club or another, see something you cannot get on a television screen. They see the live atmosphere; they get the smell of the football and get more than your “armchair fan.” They provide the teams they watch with support and can sometimes function as the “12th man” pushing their teams in the games. Join me as we briefly go through the top 10 teams with the highest average attendances in League Two.
10th – Gillingham FC – 6,136 –
In a largely unsuccessful season for the Gills that has seen the club on the lower end of the table, the fans have backed them in numbers averaging 6,136 fans per game at the Priestfield across their matches this season. They have also seen certain attendance figures from their season push above the 7,000 mark with their highest figure of the season falling against Bromley where 7,454 fans were in attendance.
9th – MK Dons – 6,819 –
Famous for their MK Stadium which has a capacity of 30,500 – the most of any team in the fourth tier – the Milton Keynes side have seen an average attendance of 6,819 in a season that has seen them have highs and lows. In periods, we have also seen more than 9,000 and 10,000 fans in attendance for their games against Notts County and AFC Wimbledon.
8th – Swindon Town – 7,019 –
With a season of two halves, the Robins have seen an average of 7,019 fans flock to the County Ground to see their team in action with Holloway’s side having beaten sides such as Bradford City and AFC Wimbledon at the stadium. At times, there has also been more than 8,000 fans in the County Ground with their games against Cheltenham Town and Bradford City both seeing attendances of over 8,000 people.
7th – Port Vale – 7,102 –
In the Valiant’s first season since their relegation to League Two and in a season that has seen a large amount of success with wins against Bradford City and Bromley amongst others, Vale have seen a large and loyal backing of 7,102 fans per match with following of 10,000+ souls being present for their games against Crewe Alexandra and Bromley.
6th – Carlisle United – 7,394 –
With its unique stands, Brunton Park can be seen to be one of League Two’s most underrated stadiums and it has certainly been well-packed by supporters throughout the season averaging an attendance of 7,394 per game. The fans attending the matches have seen periods of bad results and periods of good results in a season that has threatened relegation for the Cumbrians.
5th – Doncaster Rovers – 7,751 –
Vying for a return to the third tier after play-off heartbreak last season, Doncaster Rovers rank 5th on our list averaging an attendance of 7,751 fans per game in a season that has seen the South Yorkshire outfit establish success. In periods, the Keepmoat has also seen attendances of 10,000+ in the Rovers’ games against both Chesterfield and Notts County.
4th – AFC Wimbledon – 7,924 –
The Dons rank 4th in our list with an average of 7,924 fans flocking to Plough Lane to see their teams in action this season with these attendances arguably helping the London side build a promotion charge this season. The Dons have also seen higher attendances than this in their games against several sides with the highest attendance of the season falling in their game against Notts County where 8,659 souls were in attendance.
3rd – Chesterfield FC – 8,117 –
In the Spireites first season back in the Football League since being promoted automatically last season, fans have attended in numbers with an average of 8,117 people being in attendance each game. These fans have seen a mixed season with Cook’s side vying for the play-offs in the latter stages of the campaign. As well as this, the SMH Group Stadium has seen higher attendances such as in their game against Notts County where 10,032 fans were in attendance.
2nd – Notts County – 9,380 –
Placing 2nd in our rankings is Notts County whose Meadow Lane has seen an average of 9,380 fans in attendance per game as the Magpies aim to construct an automatic promotion charge. Meadow Lane has also seen attendances of over 10,000 on several occasions and over 13,000 fans for their highest attendance of the season against Chesterfield.
1st – Bradford City – 17,584 –
First in our rankings and on course for a successful season, Bradford City’s University of Bradford Stadium has seen an average of 17,584 fans in attendance per game with the high attendances of the Bantams being heavily publicized and applauded by fans across the country. These high attendances, which have seen 20,000+ fans in attendance on 3 occasions during the season, has seen the Bantams develop the best home form in the league.
