Lower Tiers’ Best 5: League Two Gameweek Seven

Last week, in EFL League Two, moments of drama, routine, and plenty of goals as the division had its sixth gameweek.

Now, with a new game-week upon us, the opportunity for change is present.

Ahead of this week’s fixtures, five of our writers predicted five games from the division. Let’s see what they said.

League Two Predictions

Charlie’s Predictions

Walsall 1-1 Chesterfield

It appears to be getting harder each week to predict the outcome of League Two fixtures, Walsall vs Chesterfield is no exception to this! Both sides come into the game on good form and while Chesterfield have league position on the Saddlers, I believe Walsall have been going under the radar so far this season. Going away to MK and leaving with all 3 points and beating an inform Salford the week prior, it appears Walsall should not be taken for granted this season!

The other side of the fixture is a strong Chesterfield team that will be looking to get back to winning ways after a scare against lowly Crawley Town last weekend. Yes, Chesterfield have just been beaten 7-1 by Crewe in the Vertu Motors Trophy but I seriously wouldn’t pay any attention to this competition when predicting results. As for many managers it really is just extra minutes in the legs of reserve players.

Walsall have a mixed home form and many of their games have been a low scoring affairs, I predict a hard-fought game ending in the two teams sharing the points.

MK Dons 1-3 Grimsby Town

After MK’s convincing thumping of Cheltenham three weeks ago they have struggled to pick up form, winning only one of their next three league fixtures. Despite this it’s not all doom and gloom for MK fans as they sit 7th just three points off top of the table. On the flip side Grimsby Town come into this game on back-to-back defeats to Bristol Rovers last weekend and Bradford City midweek.

I have already said my piece about the EFL Trophy, so I don’t really count that one though. The loss against Bristol Rovers is understandable as well with the heroics of the cup just three days prior to their meeting with the gas. Grimsby have missed the most “big chances” of any team in League Two and are clearly a goal scoring threat as shown by their opening games.

Bias takes over for me here and I predict a win for Grimsby Town.

Cheltenham 0-0 Accrington Stanley

Accrington treated the world last week to one of the most boring games of football ever as they drew 0-0 away at Shrewsbury. It can’t get any worse, can it? It can! Stanley fans will unfortunately be subject to the 2nd most boring game of football ever this weekend, but this time in Cheltenham as they travel to Whaddon Road. There are worse places to draw I guess.

On the other side, it looks as if Cheltenham’s time in the football league may finally be coming to an end as they sit bottom of League Two only picking up their first point last week. Perhaps they should stick to horseracing.

Notts County 2-1 Fleetwood Town

Notts County finally look to have kick started their season as they’ve managed to pick up 7 points from their last three games. Meanwhile, Fleetwood remain one of the most inconsistent sides in League Two with nobody ever being able to tell what kind of Fleetwood will turn up.

Still, I think Fleetwood have had an easy run playing the likes of Bristol Rovers, Barnet and Oldham in their opening six games, yet they only sit 11th

As ever with a Notts County fixture, there will be goals, but for who Chris Kamara? I’m not sure Jeff; I predict a slim Notts County win based off that they are at home.

Colchester United 0-4 Crewe

For me Colchester vs Crewe represents the easiest prediction of the weekend. Colchester appear to have found their new favourite scoreline this season, it’s 1-1! Half of all their league games so far have ended in a 1-1 draw. So, are you going to predict a 1-1 draw you ask?

No, that would be sensible and I’m far from that!

I like the look of Crewe this season, they have the ability to blow teams away with few questions asked. Now Colchester may aim to frustrate Crewe by adding them to the list of 1-1 victims due to a strong defensive performance and a well worked set piece.

However, I believe Crewe, by trying to play actual football will blow Colchester away. I predict a routine Crewe win.

Jacob’s Predictions

Walsall 2-0 Chesterfield

After a 0-1 win away from home to League Two favourites MK Dons Walsall then went on to have a convincing win against Shrewsbury away once more 1-3.

On the other hand, A 2-2 draw with Crawley Town and an absolute annihilation away from home losing 7-1 at Mornflake stadium. With these recent results it’s hard to vote against Walsall after Chesterfield stagnated. I’m going for a 2-0 win for The Saddlers.

MK Dons 1-0 Grimsby Town

After succumbing to their first league defeat this weekend. MK Dons sit 7th with 11 points. Similarly with the exact same league record, Grimsby sit one place below them due to goal difference.

After Grimsby’s shock win over Manchester United in the EFL Cup, The Mariners’ form has gone downhill, losing to statistically the worst EFL side over the last 6 months in Bristol Rovers and a loss to Bradford in the cup.

It’s hard for them to go to Stadium MK with this form. That’s why I’m going with a 1-0 win for The Dons.

Cheltenham Town 0-0 Accrington Stanley

As we get further into the season the more apparent the relegation battle. And so far Cheltenham and Accrington are two of the sides battling it out to stay in the promised land of the Football League.

With Cheltenham sat rock bottom of the division with one point across the first six games they have struggled massively and will continue to struggle through the season especially post January after Ethon Archer departs for Luton Town.

Accrington have two more points than The Robins. Both clubs are struggling for points this season, but I believe they will gain a point each in a 0-0 draw in Cheltenham.

Notts County 2-1 Fleetwood Town

In recent form, Fleetwood Town have struggled to pick up any momentum at all winning 1 in their last 4 matches being the most recent bout to Barrow.

Notts County have finally found some form winning 2 in their last 3 and gaining more and more strength in every game under Martin Patterson. I believe with the home support it will be another victory for Notts County in a 2-1 win for The Magpies.

Colchester United 0-3 Crewe Alexandra

The U’s have struggled at the start of the season and sit 17th with one in their last five matches having picked up one point against newly promoted Barnet.

On the flip side even with two league defeats in a row, Crewe sit 4th and come off a previously highlighted 7-1 victory over Chesterfield in the cup. It’s hard to go against the victory especially at such a margin against one of the best teams in League Two.

I’m going for a 0-3 away win for Alexandra.

Leo’s Predictions

Walsall 2–1 Chesterfield

Walsall are looking to go a step further this campaign after losing in the playoff final last season against AFC Wimbledon.

The Saddlers have picked up 12 points and they currently sit 6th in League Two so far this campaign.

However, the opposition, Chesterfield, who were promotion favourites coming into this season, have picked up 13 points and position 2nd in the League.

I can see Chesterfield having a much-improved performance after their heavy 7-1 loss at Crewe on Tuesday.

However, with Walsall’s home form being quite good this campaign, I think they are narrowly going to nick the three points, but it could go either way.

MK Dons 3–1 Grimsby Town

MK Dons have had a strong start to the League Two season under manager Paul Warne, but in their most recent match, they lost 1-0 at home to Walsall. However, the Dons still sit on 11 points and sit 7th in the League.

Since Grimsby’s enjoyable win against Manchester United in the cup on penalties, they have hit bad form with them losing matches against Bristol Rovers and Bradford in the cup.

So I am going to back the most favoured promotion favourites, MK Dons, to restart their unbeaten home run against Grimsby Town.

Cheltenham Town 1–1 Accrington Stanley

Cheltenham have had a really poor start to the 25/26 season, with them only picking up one point in 6 matches, which has led to them being placed bottom in League Two so far this season.

Accrington are similar to Town, only picking up 3 points in 5 matches, and they currently sit 21st in the league.

Neither side score many goals, so I am going to go with a 1-1 draw, even though Cheltenham are at home in this tie.

Notts County 2–1 Fleetwood Town

Notts County had a poor start to the campaign under new manager Martin Paterson, but in their last 3 matches in the league, they have picked up form, with them being unbeaten, and they are currently sitting on 8 points in the standings so far.

However, standing in their way is a strong Fleetwood side, who are on 11 points and are likewise unbeaten in their last three matches, with them most recently beating Accrington on pens in the Vertu Trophy.

I think that Notts County is going to be the side to end Pete Wild’s side’s most recent pick up of form with a narrow victory at their home, Meadow Lane.

Colchester United 1–3 Crewe Alexandra

Colchester have had a poor start to their 25/26 campaign after missing out on the playoffs last season. They are currently sitting 17th on six points and have most recently beaten League One side Wycombe Wanderers in the Vertu Trophy 2-1.

However, with Crewe having an electric start to their season, picking up 12 points, and are currently sitting 4th in the table. Also, with them on Tuesday night beating promotion favourite Chesterfield 7-1 in the cup, this shows that there is nothing stopping Alex.

So I am going to go for 3-1 to Crewe, they could win it by more, but Colchester are at home.

Tom’s Predictions

Walsall 2-1 Chesterfield

An impressive win in MK makes Walsall favourites at home here. The Spireites conceded seven to Crewe in the midweek cup so will be looking to tighten up at the back. Still, a home win feels likeliest.

MK Dons 2-1 Grimsby Town

MK only have a single win in their last three league games, while Grimsby sandwiched their Man Utd cup win with a draw in Accrington and loss to Bristol Rovers. A tight game of two good sides, so we’ll back home advantage.

Cheltenham Town 1-0 Accrington Stanley

Accrington are much better at home and Cheltenham desperately need the win here. This could really go either way, but expect the Robins to just sneak it.

Notts County 2-2 Fleetwood Town

Notts County are on the up and fairly free scoring; Fleetwood have a mixed bag of form but often see goals too. A high scoring draw could be on!

Colchester United 1-3 Crewe Alexandra

Colchester’s only win in the last five is in Shrewsbury, while Crewe have started strongly. That said, they’ve since lost to Gillingham 1-0 and 3-0 home to Swindon – however then beat Chesterfield 7-1 in the cup! Goals could be on the cards here in this away win.

William’s Predictions

Walsall 1-2 Chesterfield

This seems like the tastiest match in League Two this weekend and I can see why! Both sides had contrasting fortunes in the Vertu Trophy midweek.

Chesterfield looked a completely different side to what we’ve seen in the league so far, getting absolutely battered to Crewe Alexandra, whereas Walsall continued their impressive run of form versus Shrewsbury Town.

Looking at their more first team squads, there isn’t particularly much separating them, Chesterfield perhaps obtaining slightly superior overall depth in their squad, particularly in the attacking department.

There won’t be much in it, but I’m backing Chesterfield to bounce back from their heavy loss.

MK Dons 2-2 Grimsby Town

Currently both sat in 7th and 8th respectively, they find themselves separated by just goal difference, with Grimsby having three more goals conceded than MK, scoring the same number of goals thus far this campaign.

Both sides have clearly started in similar fashion, with them both suffering defeats last weekend, MK narrowly losing to high flying Walsall, despite dominating for a majority of the game and Grimsby likewise losing 1-0, to Darrell Clarke’s Bristol Rovers who likewise felt they could have gotten at least a point for their efforts.

With all these factors, I’m leaning towards a draw for the full time score.

Cheltenham Town 0-1 Accrington Stanley

A second successive battle at the bottom for Accrington Stanley, who were held to a scrappy 0-0 draw against fellow strugglers Shrewsbury Town, against Cheltenham Town, who hold the unfortunate record for the least goals scored so far this season at 2, with Accrington Stanley sitting just ahead of them with 3.

There’s obviously a world where we are shocked, and this game produces an all time thriller, but it feels quite obvious that the game will remain low scoring, likely just a goal in it.

Notts County 1-3 Fleetwood Town

Notts County’s start has been a mixed bag to say the least, with their first six games resulting in two wins, draws and losses, but have seemed on the up recently thanks to Matthew Dennis’s immense run of form in front of goal. But, Pete Wild’s Fleetwood side pose a threat, beating local rivals AFC Barrow last weekend by a goal to nil.

The Cod Army have the second highest xG in the division (behind Grimsby Town), and their opponents this weekend are joint with Swindon Town and Chesterfield FC for the most goals netted so far, so there’s evidence alluding to a high scoring affair, and I believe Fleetwood hold the advantage over Notts County tactically.

Colchester United 0-2 Crewe Alexandra

Crewe’s form dipped slightly after their flawless start, losing back-to-back matches against high flyers Gillingham and Swindon Town, but bounced back in style against Chesterfield in the Vertu Trophy, winning 7-1 despite youth players being scattered throughout the starting lineup.

Colchester have been this year’s disappointing side, especially in front of goal, with many supposed “experts” predicting them to finish comfortably in the playoff positions or higher.

But, the U’s currently find themselves 17th in the table, with just a single league win registered, drawing 1-1 on three occasions already, continuing their drawing antics for another year.

I won’t be biased here, Crewe will comfortably win this, I am fairly confident on this one.

Thank you for reading our League Two predictions.
