Last weekend, in League Two, teams from across the league delivered moments that fans will never forget. Now, following a mid-week full of Carabao Cup fixtures, the focus turns towards this week’s fixtures.
Ahead of the weekend, five of our writers have picked five of the best League Two fixtures and have predicted them.
Let’s find out what they said.
League Two Predictions: Gameweek Six
Charlie’s Predictions
Crewe Alexandra 3-1 Swindon Town
Despite Crewe falling to their first defeat of the season against Gillingham last week they still sit top of League Two. This is the position I believe they will maintain over the coming weekend as they welcome Swindon Town to the the Mornflake Stadium.
It was a narrow 1-0 loss that saw Crewe lose their perfect start to League Two however I do not believe this to be something to read that deeply into.
With that loss coming against an unbeaten Gillingham team, I still believe Crewe to be one of the stronger sides in the division. Furthermore, despite Swindon only sitting outside the playoffs on goal difference they have struggled on the road so far this season with just one win and two defeats.
Additionally, Swindon narrowly beating a poor Shrewsbury team (scoring in 90+3 to secure victory) I believe Crewe will prove too much for the Robins on this occasion.
Grimsby Town 2-0 Bristol Rovers
After being held to draw by Accrington Stanley last weekend Grimsby will look to get back to winning ways against Bristol Rovers. However, this could be easier said them done for the Mariners as a mid-week blockbuster against Manchester United could have swayed attention away from the league.
Furthermore, Bristol Rovers picking up their first win of the season against Cambridge United last week could prove a turning point for the Gas. After an opening three defeats they are now unbeaten in their last two games.
Despite their newfound form Grimsby remain unbeaten this season and have scored the joint most goals in League Two despite missing two penalties across their opening five games. With the Mariners being back at home, I predict a routine win for Grimsby keeping up their unbeaten record.
Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Notts County
Out of the five fixtures this prediction is the one I deliberated the most over, from thinking Notts County would win comfortably, shifting towards a tighter affair that ended in a draw and finally settling on a Tranmere win.
County’s most recent two results (1W 1D) might make you believe that they’ve shaken off their bad start and will now be picking up the results everyone expected of them at the start of the season. However, much like Swindon Notts County have not travelled too well so far this season, picking up just one point from a possible six. Furthermore, the points they have picked up have been against Shrewsbury, Newport and most recently Bromley. That is why, when facing a tougher opponent in Tranmere away from home I see them struggling.
MK Dons 1-1 Walsall
Despite their early league position, I am not convinced on MK Dons. Despite having spent bar far the most of any League Two team so far this transfer window I do not believe MK will have the same success as the other recent franchise team Wrexham.
Perhaps I am naïve, their 5-0 destruction of Cheltenham is a warning sign to teams of what they are capable of. Yet three days later they were held to a 1-1 draw by Crawley Town, another team that had yet to pick up a point.
I believe Walsall will be defensively solid, however recent injuries could mean they are far from full strength. I’m settling on a draw, but MK have full authority to prove me wrong.
Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Accrington Stanley
This week’s bottom of the table clash see’s Shrewsbury host Accrington Stanley. Shrewsbury have failed to register a single point since the opening weekend of League Two, scoring only three goals across the next five matches. Which makes it safe to say it’s been a terrible start for Shrewsbury, compounded by the fact they sit in the relegation zone.
For Stanley it too has been a far from ideal start, sitting only two places higher than Shrewsbury and having just one more point. However, having played a game less and coming off the back of a well fought point against in form Grimsby the odds might just be tipped in Accrington’s favour.
Despite this I believe it will be a low-quality affair with little between the two teams. A score is where I’m going to end on this one.
Jacob’s Predictions
Crewe Alexandra 2-1 Swindon Town
High flying Crewe were stopped in their tracks in game-week five against Gillingham facing a 1-0 defeat coming in the 89th minute. Swindon have had an up and down start to the season, winning three and losing two.
Travelling up to Crewe, I think it is hard for Swindon to manage a win so I’m going 2-1 Crewe.
Grimsby Town 3-0 Bristol Rovers
Grimsby Town have gone almost under the radar at the start of the 25/26 campaign. The Mariners currently sit fourth and still haven’t lost a game so far this season.
On the flip side, Bristol Rovers have only managed one win in their opening five after struggling to adapt to League Two.
Continuing their amazing league form, I believe that Grimsby will win this bout 3-0 against the Gas.
Tranmere Rovers 0-1 Notts County
With an even split with two draws and two wins. Tranmere Rovers are having an excellent start to the season after struggling in the previous campaign whilst opponents Notts County have struggled to get any form of consistency on the board.
With that said, their most recent game was a win.
I believe Notts County will have a well needed mentality switch winning this game 0-1 at Prenton Park.
MK Dons 2-0 Walsall
One point off the top, MK Dons are wanting to continue their great form back at home after back to back away matches. They face a Walsall side who have started the season well after a calamity at the end of the last campaign. The Dons are currently showing exceptional form.
I believe this will continue with a 2-0 win at Stadium MK.
Shrewsbury Town 0-2 Accrington Stanley
Two teams at the lower end of the table battle it out at the Crown Meadow stadium. After struggling to adapt to new life in League Two. Shrewsbury are worryingly sat 23rd in the table with just one point on the board.
With one point more than Shrewsbury but one less game, Accrington are struggling to gain any momentum. That said, it’s hard to see Shrewsbury amounting anything of value against Accrington and will lose 0-2 in front of the home fans.
Leo’s Predictions
Crewe Alexandra 2-0 Swindon Town
Crewe are looking to have a much improved season this campaign after missing out on the playoffs last season.
The Alex have picked up 12 points so far this season, and they sit at the top of the League.
However, the opposition, Swindon Town, have still picked up 9 points and are placed 8th, but in this tie, I can see Crewe turning back to winning ways in this upcoming match after losing 1-0 away at Gillingham, especially with Swindon’s main striker, Harry Smith, out for the season with an ACL injury.
Grimsby Town 2-1 Bristol Rovers
Under the new manager, Darrell Clarke, the Gas had a shaky start to the campaign with them losing their first 4 matches, but after drawing away at Oldham, narrowly beating Cambridge, and going through on pens in the EFL Trophy, their unbeaten run has started.
In contrast, Grimsby Town had a much better start to the campaign, with them picking up 11 points and not losing a single game yet at the time of writing this article.
So I think the Blundell Park outfit will narrowly come out on top in this fixture, even with the side having faced a challenging game against Manchester United on Wednesday night in the EFL Cup.
Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Notts County
Tranmere Rovers have had a solid, unbeaten start to the season, with them most recently beating Crawley Town 2-0 last Saturday. However, standing in their way is a Notts County side who have picked up form in their last two matches by picking up 4 points, with them beating Shrewsbury 4-1 and drawing against Bromley 2-2.
I think that Tranmere is going to be the side to end Notts’ most recent pick up of form with a narrow victory at their home, Prenton Park.
MK Dons 3-1 Walsall
MK Dons have had a strong start to the season under Paul Warne, with them being unbeaten in the League so far this season, and their most recent victory 2-1 victory away at Wales-based side Newport. Walsall have 9 points and they are sitting 7th in the table as they look to improve on last season and claim promotion.
So I am going to go for the most favoured promotion favourite, MK Dons, to win this, with their home form being unbeaten.
Shrewsbury Town 1-0 Accrington Stanley
Newly relegated side Shrewsbury Town have only scored two goals in the League so far this campaign, and have only picked up one point. Accrington Stanley have struggled throughout the start of the season with drawing two matches in the League and losing the rest.
In my opinion, I think that the Croud Meadow outfit will edge this tie over John Doolan’s struggling side and build on their latest 3-1 victory against the Chelsea academy in the EFL Trophy.
Tom’s Predictions
Crewe Alexandra 2-1 Swindon Town
Crewe lead the table but fell to Gillingham last time out. Swindon have good ambition this season and have started well, but a home win feels most likely.
Grimsby Town 1-2 Bristol Rovers
Grimsby are unbeaten so far this season but Darrell Clarke’s side are on the up. This could really go either way, but bias gives the Gas their first away win since the 4th Jan!!
Tranmere Rovers 1-1 Notts County
Notts County have yielded just a single point from games against Newport, Salford, Barrow, and Bromley – a 4-1 win over Shrewsbury their only win. Tranmere have only played four games but are unbeaten in that. I think they take it.
MK Dons 1-0 Walsall
Walsall have made a decent start with great wins against Swindon and Salford, while MK are unbeaten but drew to beat Oldham and Crawley. MK probably take this at home, but another draw could be on the cards.
Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Accrington Stanley
Just three points in nine games – as Accrington have only played four so far. Their two come somewhat impressively by holding Gillingham and Grimsby at home. It’s an away game here but the Shrews are not in a good place.
William’s Predictions
Crewe Alexandra 2-1 Swindon Town
Crewe’s flawless start finally came to an end last Saturday, but their momentum will likely continue, especially if Josh March can continue his impressive form up front. Swindon on the other hand, relied on a 90+3 winner to beat struggling Shrewsbury, but continued their flaky defensive form, as they are yet to register a clean sheet this campaign, which I can see Crewe taking advantage of.
Grimsby Town 1-0 Bristol Rovers
Darrell Clarke’s Rovers haven’t gotten off to the start they would have desired, losing their opening three fixtures in the league, but are off the back of their first triumph over Cambridge United. Their main flaw so far has been their strike force, bagging on just three occasions.
Grimsby in contrast, find themselves in fourth place, and may find themselves on a hangover from their cup clash with Manchester United on Wednesday night!
MK Dons 2-1 Walsall
MK still find themselves unbeaten in the league, having recruited incredibly this summer window (with a lot of help from their wealthy owners) and with a talented manager at the wheel in Paul Warne I would imagine this form continues for the foreseeable future!
Walsall is no easy challenge however, with Sadler’s Saddlers aiming to continue where they left off and challenge for promotion once again. I’m edging towards an MK win here, but not by much.
Shrewsbury Town 0-0 Accrington Stanley
In the battle of the basement boys (or as supporters have dubbed “The El Crapico”) both sides have started in abysmal fashion, with Shrewsbury conceding the most goals in the league so far with 12 going past the keeper, and Accrington looking marginally better but still not amazing, relying on star boy Tyler Walton to bag all of their goals in League Two.
This certainly won’t be a pretty game, and I can see it being a very scrappy draw.
Tranmere 2-0 Notts County
Tranmere look absolutely rock solid at the back, being the side in League Two that have conceded the fewest goals thus far, but Notts County’s formidable attack will be one of their biggest challenges to date. Matthew Dennis will be looking to continue his form in front of goal, having bagged in three consecutive games, and Jodi Jones will undoubtedly cause some trouble.
County’s defence is a lot more fragile however, so I’m predicting a Tranmere victory.
