Lower Tiers Predicts Best 5: League Two Gameweek Three

EFL League Two has delivered moments that fans will never forget as the division’s 24 sides have aimed to get their individual seasons off to a positive start.

Now, with game-week three taking place today, four of our writers have predicted the league’s best five fixtures of the weekend.

Let’s find out what they said.

League Two Predictions

Tom’s Predictions:

Oldham 1-2 Swindon

Swindon have seen 11 goals in their three games in all competitions so far this season! Oldham impressively held title favourites MK Dons on the opening day, albeit then fell to Accrington. I think Ian Holloway’s men will take this one, albeit in closer fashion than some might’ve thought a few weeks ago.

Chesterfield 2-1 Bristol Rovers

The situation at the Gas is becoming toxic at the moment, and a trip to Chesterfield won’t ease that. The pair are both fancied for automatic promotion but it’ll be Paul Cook’s terrific Spireites who take this one.

Barrow 1-1 Notts County

The pair have a single point between them as things stand. County have a couple of goals and Barrow have none yet. An away win seems most likely – but never underestimate Barrow at home!

Tranmere 2-0 Gillingham

Tranmere have had a strong start under Andy Crosby and find themselves an early fourth after recently taking down Shrewsbury 4-0. Gillingham also have four points, in fairness, but I back a home win. But this could go any way!

Shrewsbury 0-0 Colchester

Shrewsbury played out a goalless draw vs Bromley to open the season and followed that up with a 4-0 loss. Colchester are semi backed this season and have two points so far. I think the Shropshire side will want to get back to defensive solidity, and a second goalless draw may be on the cards.

William’s Predictions

Oldham Athletic 0-1 Swindon Town

Oldham have started in unextraordinary fashion, struggling to create serious attacking  threat, struggling even more to put those chances in the back of the net. In contrast, Swindon’s opening fixtures have been high scoring affairs, so I can see a narrow win for The Robins.

Chesterfield 2-0 Bristol Rovers

Two of the original League Two promotion favourites have had a vast diversity in fortunes so far, with Bristol Rovers surprising supporters with their underwhelming start, as they now sit 14 games without a win, whereas Chesterfield have registered back-to-back victories with clean sheets. I have to go with another Chesterfield win, apologies Gas supporters!

Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Gillingham

From what I’ve seen, Tranmere have looked defensively solid thus far, stunning freshly  relegated Shrewsbury 4-0 last weekend alluding to improvements going forward too. Standing in their way is Gareth Ainsworth’s rejuvenated Gills, who go into this clash 14 League games unbeaten. Not sure how, but I believe Tranmere will be the side to end this impressive run!

Colchester 0-0 Shrewsbury

Michael Appleton’s Shrewsbury side have looked dismal this season, yet to score a League Two goal, having conceded 7 goals already in the past seven days. Likewise, Colchester have struggled to find their winning instinct, drawing both games 1-1 against Tranmere & Oldham. As much as I’d love to predict a win for Colchester, this absolutely stinks of a 0-0 bore draw.

Barrow 0-2 Notts County

Neither side has gotten off to the start they’d undoubtably desired, scoring just two League Goals between them, but I can see Notts County finding the winning edge in this fixture, despite their incredibly dull and boring performances so far, which Barrow have also been reportedly suffering from, registering just one shot on target in their first two games!

Charlie’s Predictions:

Oldham Athletic 1-2 Swindon Town

Despite Oldham coming up through the playoffs, after two games they look the more structured of promoted teams this season.

Having drawn twice this season Oldham will no doubt be looking to continue their point scoring however I believe Swindon may just edge this contest. We have already seen this season that Holloway’s men are not afraid to score, adopting the “we’ll score more than you” mentally that featured in many of their games last season.

Therefore, despite Oldham being at home I feel that they will struggle under the weight of Swindon attack that scored the 3rd most goals of the 24 team’s last season.

Could this be another banana skin for Swindon or will they be able to piece together a promotion charge that many predicted them to? Only time will tell.

Chesterfield 3-1 Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers are one of the three relegated teams that find themselves in the bottom six after two games. Struggling to adapt to life in League Two, I feel that it will not get any better for the Gas as they face a strong Chesterfield side.

Chesterfield predicted by many to do well this season have so far not disappointed taking a maximum number of points from their opening two games and yet to concede a goal in the League.

While I feel the defence of Chesterfield might lose their clean sheet bonus this weekend, I still predict it to be fairly routine win for the Spireites.

Barrow 1-1 Notts County

With both teams losing 1-0 respectively to higher league opposition on Tuesday night, they will both be looking to bounce back to winning ways.

With that being said, I predict that neither will do so. It’s been a far from ideal start for Notts County having only secured just one point from their last two games and I believe these tribulations will continue.

Barrow, despite losing their opening two games, is often a tough place to go and get 3 points, showcased by the fact that of Barrow’s 15 wins last season 10 of them were played at Holker Street.

Despite what looks on paper like a bad start for Barrow, they have been faced with strong opposition in Chesterfield and MK Dons, thusly I expect them to score their first point of the campaign this Saturday.

For Notts County, while they have been no stranger to goals over the past couple of seasons, I believe Barrow will aim to frustrate them and therefore will be forced to take just one point back to Nottingham

Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Gillingham

After a power cut called off the midweek league cup fixture between Tranmere and Burton Albion, they are back into action this weekend hosting Gillingham.

With both teams having a win and a draw under their belt this game is perhaps the hardest to predict of the League Two fixtures this weekend. Tranmere dismantled Shrewsbury last week with ease while Gillingham managed to win 1-0 over last season’s bottlers Walsall.

Head-to-head, Tranmere have two wins Gillingham have two wins and there have been two draws since August 2022.

This really could go either way, I’ll certainly be leaving it out of my accumulator this weekend! With the two separated by barley anything at this point, it could well be decided by the age-old factor of home advantage, I’m going with a narrow Tranmere win.

Shrewsbury Town 0-2 Colchester United

Shrewsbury only scoring their first competitive goal of the 2025/26 season on Tuesday night in a 3-1 loss to Grimsby Town marks a dismal start to League Two life for Appleton’s men. This is something I believe will unfortunately continue this weekend against the Cowley’s Colchester United.

With Colchester being held to draws with Tranmere and Oldham I believe they will pick up their first win of the season on the road this weekend against the Shrews. With Shrewsbury fans protesting against their current owner, I see a cagey home atmosphere not helped by the poor display Shrewsbury fans might be forced to endure.

Jacob’s Predictions

Oldham Athletic 1-1 Swindon Town

Back into the EFL, Oldham have had a good start picking two points up in their first two games against both MK Dons and Colchester United respectively they go into game-week three at home against Swindon Town who have scored 4 goals in their last two league fixtures.

With a rock solid defence such as Oldham but a quality attack in Swindon.

I believe the game will finish 1-1 at Boundary Park.

Chesterfield 1-0 Bristol Rovers

Two promotion competitors face off early on into the season. Chesterfield come into this game unbeaten in the league with a steady defence keeping a clean sheet in both fixtures.

On the flip turn, Bristol Rovers come into this fixture having lost both matches and looking unsteady after the drop from League One.

I’m going 1-0 in Chesterfield’s favour. The home and league momentum is hard to knock

Barrow 0-0 Notts County

A difficult start to the league leaves Barrow in a tough position with very little momentum in the league. However, Notts have struggled to pick up points in the league, only picking up one point against Newport County in game-week one. I believe this game will end in stalemate a 0-0 draw for both sides at Holker Street.

Tranmere Rovers 2-0 Gillingham

After a massive 4-0 victory against Shrewsbury and a draw with Colchester in the league, Tranmere have had a flying start to the league currently sitting fourth with the second highest GD in the league. Gillingham may have the same points however are struggling to score goals. I’m predicting a 2-0 win for Tranmere bringing more momentum to the Rovers.

Shrewsbury Town 0-1 Colchester United

Colchester come into this fixture drawing both league matches whilst Shrewsbury come off a one sided loss to Tranmere mentioned previously. Both clubs struggled to score but ultimately Shrewsbury looked to have the weaker backline. I am going for a 0-1 Colchester win helping gain some valuable points for the U’s.
