Leicester City Target GAIS Attacker

Leicester City are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Ibrahim Diabate from GAIS, and the move could provide the firepower the Foxes have desperately lacked since Jamie Vardy’s departure.

The 26-year-old Ivorian enjoyed a breakout season in Sweden’s top flight in 2025, finishing as joint-top scorer with 18 goals in 29 appearances, and has attracted attention not only from Leicester but also from Championship rivals Wrexham.

As the Foxes sit 13th in the Championship, six points off the play-offs with 19 games remaining, the need for a clinical finisher is clear. Marti Cifuentes’ squad boasts quality, but results have been inconsistent, and the absence of a natural goalscorer has limited Leicester’s attacking threat. Could Diabate be the missing piece?

Diabate: A Career Built for Breakthroughs

Diabate began his career in Ivory Coast with ASEC Mimosas, earning a first-team promotion in 2017 after a loan with Ligue 2 side Ivoire Académie. In 2019, he moved to Spain, joining RCD Mallorca B and impressing with a prolific goalscoring season, narrowly missing promotion via the play-offs.

A loan to Sevilla Atlético followed, and he made his senior debut for Sevilla in the Copa del Rey in January 2021, before finishing the season with Atlético Madrid B. Opportunities were limited in Spain, prompting a move to Sweden in July 2023, where he joined Västerås SK. He helped the club secure promotion to the Allsvenskan but endured a tough top-flight season in 2024, as Västerås were relegated despite his regular involvement.

A free transfer to GAIS in 2025 proved a turning point. Diabate flourished, finishing joint-top scorer and helping GAIS to a third-place finish, showcasing intelligent movement, finishing ability, and adaptability in a top-flight European league.

Managerial Praise

Fredrik Holmberg, GAIS manager, highlighted Diabate’s qualities:

“We saw all the attributes he has. He is strong, intelligent, moves the way a number nine should, is quick enough, can go deep, and links play well. He’s pretty complete—exactly what we want from a striker,” Holmberg said.

He added: “What was uncertain was how quickly he would learn to play as a number nine in our system. I didn’t expect him to adapt as fast as he has.”

Holmberg also emphasized his defensive contribution: “To be a number nine in our team, you have to set expectations for yourself in the defensive game.”

Could Diabate Fit at Leicester?

Cifuentes, who has previously managed in Sweden, is looking for a forward who can score goals and press effectively traits Diabate seems to offer. Many of his 18 goals for GAIS came from clever movement, finishing crosses or through balls, a style that could suit the fast, physical demands of the Championship.

Adding Diabate could also reshape Leicester’s midfield. Pushing Jordan James higher would allow him to exploit late runs and long-range shooting without defensive burdens, while signing a creative midfielder like Andy Irving (or a similar profile) could give the team the stability to unlock James and other attacking talents.

Predicted Starting XI With Diabate

A potential lineup incorporating the Ivorian could look like this:

Stolarczyk; Ricardo, Nelson, Okoli, Choudhury; Skipp, Soumaré; Monga, James, Fatawu; Diabate

This setup balances a solid defensive base, a dynamic and creative midfield, and a modern, complete No. 9 up front, offering the Foxes the attacking structure they’ve lacked since Vardy left.

Financial and Transfer Context

Leicester’s January activity is influenced by financial constraints, meaning new signings may hinge on player sales. Any additions are expected to include loan-to-buy arrangements, with GAIS reportedly valuing Diabate around £2 million. With Wrexham also monitoring the striker, Leicester will need to act quickly to secure their target.

Verdict: The Missing Piece?

Diabate represents a calculated gamble: a player untested in English football but proven in Sweden’s top flight, possessing pace, movement, and finishing ability. His addition could give Leicester the clinical edge up front, while also freeing midfielders like Jordan James to flourish.

With the window closing and rivals circling, the Foxes’ next few weeks could determine whether Diabate is truly the missing piece that transforms their 2026 campaign.
