Bradford City defender Lewis Richards is weighing up his future after emerging as a January target for both Crawley Town and Fleetwood Town, with talks understood to be ongoing as the left-back looks for a fresh start away from Valley Parade.
The Lower Tiers understands that Richards’ current deal expires in the summer, having triggered a one-year extension in 2025, but Bradford City boss Graham Alexander has made it clear that a further contract will not be forthcoming.
The defender has been granted permission to explore a move during the January window, with the club recognising his desire for a new challenge and the need for regular, guaranteed minutes elsewhere.
His time at Valley Parade has been repeatedly disrupted by injury, particularly over the past two campaigns. A persistent shoulder problem required surgery and ruled him out for a significant portion of last season, while a hamstring issue has sidelined him for spells this term. A change of environment now feels timely.
Richards remains a player of undoubted ability, and a sustained run of games could allow him to fully demonstrate the qualities that have too often been curtailed by misfortune.
At 24 years old, Richards is at a key point in his career and regular football is now the clear priority. Both Crawley Town and Fleetwood Town are understood to be monitoring his situation closely, believing that a fully fit Richards could be a valuable asset for the second half of the season and beyond. Each club can offer him the opportunity to reset, rebuild momentum, and re-establish himself as a consistent starter.
Richards joined Bradford City in 2023 after leaving Wolves, the club where he rose through the academy ranks and gained his football education. Despite his stop-start spell at City, he has shown flashes of his quality whenever available, combining athleticism with a natural attacking threat from left-back.
In total, Richards has made over 50 appearances for the Bantams, scoring twice and earning praise for his professionalism during difficult injury periods. Those close to the player believe a change of scenery could be crucial in unlocking his best form.
With January progressing quickly, a move now looks increasingly likely as all parties seek clarity. For Richards, the next few weeks could define the next chapter of a career that still holds plenty of promise.
