The Lower Tiers Interview with Notts County Centre-Back Jacob Bedeau

We at the Lower Tiers spoke to Notts County centre-back Jacob Bedeau, before their fixture against Bromley.

Notts County

Notts County currently sit in third, having secured six consecutive victories, and the captain aims to extend the winning streak to seven in the upcoming weekend fixture.

Bedeau has featured in every single League Two fixture for County at the time of writing, and has captained the side in recent weeks, due to Matthew Palmer’s injury.

I discussed all things League Two and Notts County with Jacob Bedeau in a short interview conducted ahead of their fixture against the league leaders, Bromley.

With Notts County currently sitting in third place, is this where you expected the club to be sitting at the start of the season, or is it exceeding, similar or matching your pre-season expectations?

“In League Two and even probably in League One, we’d be wanting to at the top end of that league.”

“That’s obviosuly where we are, and the two seasons I’ve been here our aim is to be right at the top of this league.”

Would you say that the quality overall standard in quality of League Two has improved this season, or is it relatively similar?

“I think it’s probably similar to last year.”

“I think you the cluster of seven or eight teams that are going for promotion, you have that mid-range, and then you have those teams just trying to stay up.”

“And I think every year in League Two any team can beat any other team and that’s what makes it such a competitive and such a tough league to get out of really.”

“So, I think it’s pretty similar every year to be honest.”

What would you say needs to improve within the squad to guarantee Notts County an automatic promotion spot this season?

“I actually don’t think we need to improve anything.”

“At the moment we are playing well and full of confidence within the team and each other, so I think it’s about staying the course really and to just keep building on what we are doing in terms of the basics and the tactics that we are playing to at the moment.”

What would you say have been the main factors behind your current run of impressive form?

“I think it’s a bit of everything really.”

“We’ve been really good on the ball; we’ve been excellent off it and whatever challenges have been thrown at us in individual games which I think we’ve overcome, whether that’s staying really defensively solid against a side like Crewe, where we win 1-0 and I don’t think they had a shot on target.”

“And then you look at a game against Gillingham where it’s one-nil and they’re throwing everything forward and we’ve got Belly (James Belshaw) in goal to keep that clean sheet.”

“And also, if you look at the Swindon game, we go a goal down against another team that’s up there and we’ve got to score two to get the three points, so we’ve kind of done everything that’s been asked of us really.”

What would you say your best individual performance has been this season?

“I’d say against Crewe, because we didn’t concede a shot on target, and as a defender I like when we have that stat!”

What has been your highlight playing for Notts County in your two years at the club so far?

“I would say just kind of being around the lads really, I think we have such a good dressing room, making new friends and people that you respect, and you get the opportunity to play with and that’s probably been my highlight so far.”

“But hopefully this year, my highlight will be getting promoted to League One, so fingers crossed!”
