League Two continues this weekend with its sides looking to improve or continue their good form accumulated so far this campaign. With this in mind, five of our writers have predicted three of the best games in League Two to predict ahead of the weekend.
Let’s see what they predicted.
League Two Predictions
Charlie’s Predictions
MK Dons 1-2 Gillingham
After 21 games unbeaten Gillingham finally fell to defeat last weekend after a 1-0 loss to Harrogate Town. It I was a Gillingham fan I wouldn’t be worried though, I can’t see it being too long before Gillingham get back to winning ways or at least getting something from MK.
Saying this, MK are no pushovers- last weekend they were in fact the winners of the Soccer Saturday challenge, so I was forced to spend an evening in…lovely…Milton Keynes. Although they’re form is patchy, they squad defiantly has the quality to be challenging at least the top seven of the division.
Analysing MK’s home though, of their past four they have lost three and won only one. This makes sense as Stadium MK rarely gets filled and would surely be hard to create the atmosphere required. I’m going for a Gillingham win but not a resounding one. 2-1 Gillingham.
Salford 2-3 Grimsby Town
Goals! Goals! Goals! Without revealing the scoreline that would be my first prediction for this weekend’s fixture between Salford and Grimsby Town. It’s 4th vs 5th with the victor most likely propelling themselves into the automatic promotion spots.
Looking at form, while Grimsby are coming to Great Manchester off the back of a 7-1 win against Cheltenham, it must be taken with a pinch of salt, two red cards and a team already struggling it could have easily been ten! Salford on the other hand in their past two games faced 2nd sitting Swindon (which they won) and Bristol Rovers who unfortunately for Salford were in the form of their life.
A hard one to predict, my heart will of course always say Grimsby. My head probably favours Salford… you know I have to back the Mighty Mariners. I predict 3-2 Grimsby Town.
Walsall 1-1 Bristol Rovers
It’s a bad time for anyone to play Bristol Rovers right now, they just don’t appear to lose. However, if anyone could stop them it’s 1st in the league, right? To be honest I’m not quite sure how they’ve ended up there, I feel like they’ve just slowly crept up on it.
Since they’re 1-0 loss to Grimsby Town though they have gone seven games without loss in the League so perhaps it’s not that surprising. They’ve had some impressive wins in those seven games as well, beating Salford, Chesterfield and MK dons.
But Bristol Rovers have also beaten Salford! Cambridge and Grimsby Town in their unbeaten streak. This is a particularly difficult game to predict as all three have been this week. I’m going for draw 1-1, points shared evenly.
Jacob’s Predictions
MK Dons vs Gillingham
Third place Gillingham travel to MK Dons after succumbing to their first loss of the campaign to Harrogate Town. After a great start to the season, Gillingham wilm want to bounce back on their loss. With MK Dons picking up a needed victory, away to Shrewsbury Town. They will be battling for back to back wins. With this momentum I see MK Dons winning this home bout 1-0 at Stadium MK.
Salford vs Grimsby
5th place Grimsby travel to 4th place Salford who wilm be hoping to widen the gap of one point between the two sides. Grimsby’s annihilation of Cheltenham Town on Saturday sets their attacking prowess apart from many teams in the division (albeit against bottom of the table). With both Salford and Grimsby allowing 13 goals to go past them this season, this game will not be short of goals. I believe this match will end in a 2-2 draw. Both clubs gaining a valuable point.
Walsall vs Bristol Rovers
Top of the table Walsall host Bristol Rovers who as of late have been fantastic, winning 4 out of their last 5 wanting to make up for their lack luster start. Statically Walsall have been one of the worst sides in the division, however they are sat top under Matt Saddler. Even with these stats, I still think Walsall will manage to get all 3 points in a 2-0 win.
Leo’s Predictions
MK Dons 0 – 1 Gillingham
MK Dons host Gillingham this weekend. The Dons, who were favoured for promotion at the start of the season, currently sit 9th in the table on 15 points from 10 games.
Gillingham currently sit 3rd on 21 points, some could argue that they have played well so far this campaign under Gareth Ainsworth, with them being unbeaten until their defeat at Harrogate last weekend.
In my opinion, I think that considering MK Dons’ current home form, which is poor, I am going to go with a 1-0 away win for the Gills, which would see them return to winning ways after last weekend.
Salford 2 – 1 Grimsby
Salford were on a strong, unbeaten run until their defeat against Bristol Rovers last weekend, but they are still in a good position with them sitting 4th on 19 points.
However, with Grimsby being 5th and sitting on 18 points, which is one point behind Salford, this will be a tight contest, especially with Grimsby looking to build on their 7-1 against Cheltenham.
So I am going for a very narrow 2-1 victory to Salford, with Salford having impressive home form and them looking to return to winning ways. However, this tie could go either way.
Walsall 3 – 1 Bristol Rovers
Walsall hosts Bristol Rovers this weekend, with the home side on a good run of form with their latest 3-1 victory against Accrington. The Saddlers currently sit top of the league on 22 points.
Bristol Rovers are on a good run of form as well, with them being unbeaten. The Gas currently sit 7th on 17 points.
I am going to go with a 3-1 victory to Walsall, which would see the opposition’s unbeaten run end. However, this game could go either way.
Tom’s Predictions
MK 1-1 Gillingham
The expected runaway leaders only have a single win in the last five – and their four wins this campaign have come against Barrow, Cheltenham, Newport, and Shrewsbury. Gillingham sit 3rd and suffered their first loss last weekend against Harrogate. Gillingham should be favourites with six wins to boot, but MK can’t afford any more dropped points, especially at home.
Salford 2-2 Grimsby
The Ammies lost in Bristol last weekend to put an end to their three straight wins. Grimsby meanwhile battered then-managerless Cheltenham 7-1. Another cracking encounter this weekend – I’d expect goals here.
Walsall 1-1 Bristol Rovers
DC’s men are certainly firing – no one can best the Gas’ run of seven unbeaten across the entire EFL. Walsall are only a game behind and have won five of those six, the first three all 1-0. The Saddlers are the top team, Rovers have are the form team… another draw! Another that could go either way.
