Luton Town: What went wrong?

Last season, Luton Town were in the Premier League battling relegation, but having some EMPHATIC wins against the likes of Brighton, Crystal Palace and even Newcastle. But after being relegated after finishing 18th place, they now they sit 22nd place after winning their first game 1-0 over Portsmouth, making it their first league win in 11 matches. So, what went wrong?

Managerial Changes

To begin the season, Luton Town kept their manager, Rob Edwards, who had been at the club since 2022, joining from bitter rivals Watford, guiding Luton Town to the Premier League after winning on penalties against Coventry City.

On the day of the playoff final, 27th May 2023, a decade ago the Hatters had just finished their fourth consecutive season in the Conference Premier in seventh, the club’s lowest ever league position.

The Rob Edwards era was described as the best era for Luton Town Football Club in the past few decades.

Premier League Life for the Hatters

Premier League life for Luton got off to a rough start, as the first game of the season against Brighton ended in a 4-1 thrashing to Brighton.

Luton were not able to get their first win until Gameweek 6 where they defeated Everton 2-1, Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris both getting on the scoreboard.

But on 19th May 2024 Luton Town’s Premier League spell was cut, as Luton Town’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed following a 4-2 defeat by Fulham at Kenilworth Road. Ending a dream run for Luton Town fans.

Championship Disaster

At the beginning of the Championship season people’s expectations were high for Luton Town and some even expected them to go straight back up, an example being the Second Tier Podcast, who predicted them to go straight up.

But however, it was a bumpy start to the season, as they lost 4-1 vs Burnley on the first game of the season, and were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the second round on penalties against QPR.

It was not long until Rob Edwards left, as on the 9th of January 2025 Luton manager Rob Edwards left after poor run. Having only won 7 or their 26 Championship games at that time.

“It’s been a privilege to manage Luton Town Football Club, but now is the right time for me to move on, for the club and me,” the former Wales international said in a statement on the club website.

“I’m really proud of what we achieved, not only winning a play-off game which the club had struggled to do, but winning the final and gaining promotion to the Premier League at Wembley was the most amazing experience.

“I take with me some incredible memories, not just the victories against Watford or Sunderland in the semi-final, or Brighton, Newcastle, Palace or Everton.

“But the way we did it, how we played against Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Villa and Manchester United, we were brave and brilliant to watch, how the Kenny bounced and roared. That’s what I’ll remember.”

Bloomfield Era

Not long after Edward’s resignation, Matt Bloomfield was appointed first team manager on the 14th of January 2025.

Bloomfield recently managed Wycombe, but left them to join struggling Luton on a 3 and a half year contract.

However, Luton were still struggling and unable to find a win in 8 games, only getting 3 points in 8 games.

It was until Saturday the 1st of March before Bloomfield managed to find a win, defeating Portsmouth 1-0, before this Luton sat bottom of the league, fighting against the odds for relegation.

Predictions for the rest of the season

As the season has only 11 games left to go and Luton are yet to play any in form teams such as Leeds United and Burnley.

Do you think relegation could still be on the cards?
