Luton Town

Despite earlier reports, it is now emerging that Luton Town’s move for Barnsley captain Luca Connell is unlikely to take place after talks between the two clubs have taken place.

It is understood that any current bids from the Hatters remain well off the mark for Barnsley, who will look to hold onto their captain on the final day of the January transfer window.

The defensive midfielder, who has amassed 152 appearances for the Tykes over the course of four seasons has become a key figure at Oakwell, being one of the first names on the team sheet when available for selection.

Connell’s Time in Barnsley

Though not matching the heights he reached under Micheal Duff when the Reds fell short in the playoff final to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, he has been a key contributor to a side who have been in and around the promotion conversation for his entire stint at the club.

Connell signed a long term contract extension in the summer of 2023 which keeps him tied to Barnsley until at least 2027. This gives the Tykes significant leverage in negotiations. With both Luton and Barnsley pushing for a playoff spot, disrupting the midfield by selling their skipper to a direct rival without a substantial premium wouldn’t make sense.

Luton, who would be looking to add grit and leadership to their engine room are believed to have contacted Barnsley earlier this morning with an offer that fell significantly below the Reds valuation. While they may return with an improved bid before the 7pm deadline, it is looking increasingly unlikely that they will secure the signature of the 24 year old in the remaining hours of the window.

For now, it appears Connell will be leading Barnsley out for the remainder of the campaign. A boost for the fans who will have an anxious few hours ahead of them amidst rumours linking their star men away from Oakwell.
