Stockport County have pulled off a major signing – and made history in the process.
The Club has confirmed the arrival of Malik Mothersille from Peterborough United, with the exciting forward signing a three-year deal at Edgeley Park (plus an option for a fourth).
The fee? Undisclosed – but big enough to break a 26-year club record.
That’s right: it beats the price paid for Ian Moore all the way back in 1998.
It’s a bold move. And it shows just how serious County are about the season ahead.
A Star on the Rise
Mothersille, just 21, is coming off a standout season in League One. He scored 16 goals, assisted 10 more, and was named Peterborough’s Young Player of the Year.
He played a huge part in their run to retain the Vertu Trophy – including key goals in both the quarter-final and semi-final – before helping them lift the silverware at Wembley.
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. His journey has taken him from Leyton Orient’s academy to Chelsea, where he trained alongside some big names – and then to Peterborough, where he really started to shine. Now, after two years at Posh, he’s ready for the next chapter.
And he’s chosen County.
International Recognition
His form hasn’t gone unnoticed outside of England, either.
In May, he made his international debut for Jamaica, coming off the bench in the Unity Cup Final against Nigeria. It’s a big moment in any player’s career – and another sign of just how far he’s come in a short space of time.
Versatile, Quick, Dangerous
Malik isn’t just a goal scorer.
He’s creative, unselfish, and can play anywhere across the front line – out wide, through the middle, or even deeper if needed. Only one player in the league (Leyton Orient’s Jamie Donley) managed more assists than him last season.
And with Tanto moving on, the timing couldn’t be better.
“We’re Getting Him at the Right Time”
Speaking after the deal was announced, CEO Simon Wilson said:
“We’re buzzing to get Malik in the building. He’s one of the most exciting young players in the EFL right now, and we feel like this is the perfect time to bring him here. We know what he’s capable of – and we’re ready to help him take that next step.”
Manager Dave Challinor added:
“This is a huge signing for us – not just in terms of ability, but ambition. Malik was on our radar, but we weren’t sure we could get it done without promotion. So credit to everyone behind the scenes for making it happen. He’s quick, he’s dangerous, and he’s only going to get better. We can’t wait to get started.”
Eyes on Pre-Season
Malik will train with the squad for the first time this afternoon, as pre-season preparations step up ahead of next week’s camp in San Pedro del Pinatar.
He’s here. He’s hungry. And he’s ready to show County fans exactly why he’s been talked about all summer.
