EFL Championship Trio Target Danish Defender

The Championship trio of Charlton Athletic, Millwall and Preston North End are all interested in Danish defender, Mathias Ross, following his departure from Galatasaray.

Mathias Ross’ Record

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at Sparta Prague 17 appearances in an uninspiring spell.

The Czech side had an option to purchase the player for just over £1 million but declined, allowing Ross to become a free agent this summer, with Galatasaray releasing from his contract 12 months early.

The Dane joined the Turkish giants from Aalborg BK in 2022 but never settled in Istanbul.

After barely being involved with the first team during his first campaign, Ross was loaned out to NEC Nijmegen where he played 25 times, impressing gradually as he played more.

A second loan followed at Sparta Prague, but Ross never found his feet in the Czech Republic and now finds himself without a club.

As Mathias Ross looks to reignite his career, the Denmark U21 international is now a target of three Championship clubs who believe he still has the potential to significantly improve their backline.

Both Preston and Charlton have had quite similar approaches to their target transfers, with the two clubs going head-to-head for several players.

It was Paul Heckinbottom’s PNE that secured the services of Brighton defender Odeluga Offiah over Charlton and QPR. He will be hoping to do the same here but faces additional competition from Millwall.

The Lions narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season and are looking to add depth in every area. The addition of Ross would ease any headache Alex Neil has about central defenders with Japhet Tanganga continuing to gain interest from the Premier League.

It is also reported that Mihailo Ivanovic is being looked at by Serie A side Parma, with Everton and Wolves also interested in the attacker.
