Newport County boss Christian Fuchs insists he is happy with where his side are at the moment, and they are not in a relegation battle, according to the South Wales Argus

Newport County

County were in the relegation places when the former Leicester City defender took over. The Exiles host Accrington Stanley tomorrow, with them being just one point away from escaping the drop zone.

In the last eight games, County have two wins and two draws. It would seem Fuchs is slowly steadying the ship in South Wales.

Midfielder Kai Whitmore has been in great form, gaining seven goal contributions.

It’s fair to say there was somewhat shock in the Exiles fanbase when Fuchs was announced. This is his first League management role. He appears to have ridden that wave now though.

He did, however, have a brilliant playing career, mainly with Leicester City. Following the long spell with the Foxes he tried his hand in America.

Quotes

“We are pushing forward. Look at our last eight games – the team has improved massively.” Said Fuchs speaking to the South Wales Argus.

“When you go to Bromley and you are more than competitive and could easily go away with a point, when you go to Gillingham and two individual mistakes cost us three points – I don’t think that’s a team that fights against relegation.”

“Of course, we are in a position where we are right now. But the team looks way better than a team that should be at the bottom of the table. The team has too much quality to be down there.”

“Everybody is believing that, but the basis of the belief is the proof that they are doing.”

“We’ve got seven points from the last three home games, so we have started some sort of a run at home. It’s down to us to continue and keep pushing forward. It’s in our own hands.”

“The goals-per-game for us went up by 35 per cent,” said the Exiles boss. “There were 25 per cent more counter-attacks leading to is having a shot. We increased the shots on goal by 24 per cent, and we increased the expected points-per-season by 17.25 points.”

“That is in six weeks, and there is still a lot of improvement to do.”
