Newport County have revealed they missed out on a transfer target on deadline day as they looked to add firepower for the run-in.
League Two club Newport County have admitted that they missed out on their top transfer target during the window, as they made an ambitious move for a forward, as the deadline loomed.
County have been fighting relegation and are looking for more firepower up front, and that led them to manager Christian Fuchs’ former teammate Jamie Vardy, with whom he’d played at Leicester City, during the Foxes brighter days.
Fuchs’ side currently sit second bottom of League Two, only Harrogate Town are any lower in the EFL table. Newport have won just one of their last five, after impressing Fuchs’ at the start of his reign.
Fuchs’ side face a tough test as they host Grimsby Town on Saturday, the in-form Mariners have won six of their last eight games in all competitions.
A trip to Swindon Town next Wednesday also awaits the Exiles. Ian Holloway’s side sit in fourth place as they look to cement a push for promotion.
This duo of games could prove pivotal to Newport as they look to gain points to catch the likes of Shrewsbury Town and Barrow.
Vardy is plying his trade in Italy with Cremonese. The Englishman has scored five goals and gained one assist in nineteen games for Davide Nicola’s side.
One thing is for certain, if the Vardy transfer had gone through then the mere presence of the man around the changing room, would be enough to lift the County players, let alone the goals he could score in South Wales.
Despite being 37 now, he would still be able to do a job in League Two. Fuchs’ and Vardy formed a bond whilst experiencing several good years together at Leicester City, including winning the Premier League together in 2015/16.
The Foxes were one of the surprise packages that season, as they built their own fairytale and etched themselves into the history books forever.
