Nick Powell is currently in negotiations with Bradford City surrounding a contract extension ahead of the Bantams’ second summer transfer window since the club’s promotion to League One in the 2024-25 season.
Powell made just ten appearances for City in the league during the 2025-26 season, with him spending a large majority of the season injured, although he made a series of games towards the end of the campaign.
One goal has been returned from the 32-year-old since his arrival at the club (the equalizer against Barnsley at Oakwell in mid-April) although question marks are still persistent surrounding his injury record as supporters weigh up whether the midfielder deserves a contract extension.
It is clear that the former English youth international brings desired experience to Bradford, adding to the experience that the club already has through Antoni Sarcevic and Max Power amongst others.
Having played for clubs such as Stoke City, Wigan Athletic, and Hull City, after coming through the academy set-up at the Potters, it is clear to see how well-known Powell is to many clubs across the country.
His experience, ranging from the Premier League with Manchester United to League Two with Stockport County, could be pivotal in helping youthful players such as Bobby Pointon and Jenson Metcalfe and may help the duo (amongst others within the Bradford squad) to become even better.
Given the club currently only have a number of attacking midfielders, adding Powell to the ranks for another year would add much-needed depth to the position whilst subsequently allowing the club to arguably focus on other key areas, including goalkeeper and striker.
Consistency in playing has been a primary issue with Nick Powell at City, however. Whereas he played twenty games or more in five of the six seasons preceding his arrival at Bradford, a lack of playing time has hindered squad depth and has caused some supporters to express concern.
If Bobby Scarborough, alongside those who fill the medical team at Bradford City, can work with the midfielder to reduce the likelihood of him becoming injured long-term again, it is likely that the quality that shone through in the closing stages of the season could be on display on a more consistent basis.
There is no shying away from the fact that Nick Powell has a large amount of quality in his boots. It is arguably his ability to deliver this consistently without injuries, however, which may cast doubt into the mind of Bradford supporters.
The club may choose to utilize Powell as a squad player throughout the coming season, helping where is needed, although could also choose to pursue another central attacking midfielder who can provide the same quality of the 32-year-old but who also has a lower risk of injury.
That decision ultimately lies in the hands of those at Bradford City and supporters will look eagerly to see if the midfielder is given a contract extension or whether an agreement will not be reached, a decision that is likely to be decided in the coming weeks.
