Oldham Athletic want to bolster their attacking options by signing a striker, according to Alan Nixon:
Michael Mellon To Oldham Athletic?
The attacker they have in mind is someone very familiar to their manager Micky Mellon – it is his son, Michael Mellon.
If the deal goes through, 21 year old Mellon will join the Latics on loan from Burnley. He has yet to make a senior appearance for the Clarets, but has risen through the ranks, making appearances at various youth levels. Before signing for Burnley, he was in the academy at Manchester United.
Mellon junior, who is also a Scotland youth international, is unlikely to break into the first team at Burnley, so a loan deal would suit both parties. Mellon has been loaned out previously to Morecombe and Dundee, and last season he spent the first half of the season at Stockport County, before moving to Bradford City, where he helped them secure promotion to League One.
‘I’ve had three loans where I’ve done okay but have been a bit of a squad player at times,’ Mellon told Burnley’s website.
‘Wherever I go this year I need to make sure that I’m the main man and I think I need that. If I give it everything, hopefully I can get back to that point and everything works out well.’
He scored two goals in his 15 appearances for Bradford last season, but his most successful loan stint came at Morecombe, where he scored 15 goals in 35 appearances across two loan spells. Doncaster Rovers were interested in signing the 6’5 striker back in June, but the deal fell through.
Oldham currently sit 19th in League Two, with no wins so far this season. They lost 1-0 to Gillingham in their last game and travel to Cambridge United this weekend.
