As the final stages of the season approach, it’s looking more and more likely that Port Vale will be relegated. They currently sit bottom of League One, 9 points behind 23rd place Rotherham United and 11 points from safety.

How Did We Get Here

It’s been a difficult season for The Vale. Their first seven league games didn’t yield any wins, but they put on some decent performances.

Three league wins in a row would follow as Darren Moore’s side started to build up a head of steam. However, this would be the high point of the season.

The next 12 league games were particularly painful for Vale fans. During this time, the Valiants would come away with 0 wins, 4 draws and 8 loses.

To make matters worse, only two of those games saw the Vale score, going six consecutive games without finding the net. Moore was relieved of his duties after losing 5-0 to Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

Two games later, Port Vale would beat Blackpool 5-1, scoring the same number of goals in one game as they had in their last 13 league games combined. Former Northampton Town manager Jon Brady was appointed in early January.

During his five league games in charge so far, Brady has overseen 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses.

Fresh Faces

Despite the January Transfer Window slamming shut last week, the Vale have made two new signings. Grant Ward has been a free agent since leaving Bristol Rovers in the summer following their relegation to League Two.

Meanwhile, Onel Hernandez joins his second side of the season, having signed a short-term contract with Charlton Athletic in September. Both players have signed contracts until the end of the season.

Brady will be hoping that Hernandez will be able to replace the goals that Devante Cole brought to Vale Park. Cole was the Vale’s top scorer this season with six league goals before his move to Luton Town in January.

That is where Port Vale’s main problem lies. They’ve only managed to find the net 22 times in 28 games, by far the fewest in the division.

Cole was the only player in the side with more than 2 League One goals to his name this season.
