Portsmouth Are Working On A Sensational Move For Ipswich Town Man

Portsmouth are working on a deal with Ipswich Town to sign former winger Conor Chaplin back to the club on a straight loan deal, no obligation to buy, with Town having a recall clause for January, according to EADT and TWTD

Chaplin To Portsmouth

Chaplin, who was born in Worthing, joined Portsmouth’s academy in 2003, breaking into the first team 11 years later and staying with them until 2019, when he made the move to Coventry City after an initial loan spell  was the joint-top scorer in League One in the 2022/23 campaign, netting 23 times, plus three more in cup competitions

Chaplin, 28, has been a key player in Kieran McKenna’s back-to-back promotion-winning side, having signed for his old Pompey boss, Paul Cook, from Barnsley in the summer of 2021. Due to his contract being up in the summer, it might look like he’s played his final game for the Tractor Boys vs Derby County on Saturday. He helped fire the Blues back-to-back promotions, making 22 appearances in an injury-hit Premier League Campaign last season.

In total, in the four years that Conor Chaplin has played, 147 games for Ipswich with 127 starts and 47 substitute appearances and netted 55 goals in that time . So he returns to his boyhood club after 7 years away from the club, so we will bring his qualities back to Portsmouth, where he also scored 8 goals for them and made 31 appearances for them, but also it’s a massive loss for the Tractor Boys in their push back to the Premier League. His departure leaves the Ipswich squad down to the minimum senior squad limit of 25

The most important moments for Chaplin in a town shirt have been the back-to-back promotions and the incredible run across the pitch when they beat Southampton 3-2.
