Promotion Could Trigger Coventry City Star’s Departure

Coventry City currently find themselves eight points clear at the top of the Championship table and promotion to the Premier League looking likely heading into the final 11 games of the season.

In a successful season so far for the Sky Blues, which has been hampered by injury and suspension – the back four has been relatively consistent.

Wales international Jay Dasilva has played the majority of games at left-back whilst Liam Kitching and Bobby Thomas partnered up in centre-back.

Recently Kitching has been dropped for the impressive Joel Latibeaudiere whilst the right-back position has been held by Milan Van Ewijk.

Dasilva, Kitching and Van Ewijk’s efforts this season which has seen them top of the league has seen them rewarded with new contracts.

However, one player that has not seen much game-time this season is 32-year-old left-back Jake Bidwell who has been limited to seven appearances and two starts with just 256 minutes of football played so far this season.

If Coventry City were to get promoted to the Premier League, it is likely that Bidwell wouldn’t feature at all with improvements likely and with Dasilva ahead of him in the pecking order.

Despite his contract not expiring until the summer of 2027, there is a high chance the English left-back will not be at the Sky Blues next season.

The former England U19 international has played 146 games for the Sky Blues since joining from Swansea in the January of 2022 and was heavily linked with a move to Portsmouth in the January transfer window.

What next?

At the age of 32, it is likely he would still do a good job at the lower end of the Championship or the top end of League One as he comes with bags of experience but is definitely still good enough to put a shift in regularly.

Despite the rumours not happening that Bidwell would leave the Sky Blues in January to Pompey, it remains a mystery whether they would still be interested in him in the summer, should they stay in the Championship this season.

As proved so far this season, Frank Lampard’s side have not missed Bidwell’s experience on the pitch as Dasilva has shown immense quality throughout the season but having an older head amongst a young side fighting for promotion, this can always be useful.
