The Lower Tiers understands that Reading have emerged as serious contenders in the race to sign Bolton Wanderers striker Victor Adeboyejo, with the Royals understood to be exploring a permanent deal for the 27-year-old.
While Mansfield Town are currently leading the chase with a permanent deal until the end of the season currently on the table, Reading’s interest adds a significant new dimension to Adeboyejo’s imminent departure from the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
Mansfield have been well placed in discussions over a move and see Adeboyejo as a player who could bolster their attacking options for the second half of the season. However, Reading’s willingness to consider a permanent solution could appeal both to Bolton and the player, particularly given his contract situation.
Adeboyejo is definitely leaving Bolton this window — the only question is the route he takes.
When Victor Adeboyejo arrived at Bolton at the end of the January transfer window in 2023, the £500,000 fee paid was the most the club had spent on a player in a decade. Now 27, Adeboyejo is firmly in the peak years of his career and in need of regular first-team football.
With his contract expiring at the end of the season and an extension highly unlikely, a move to Mansfield or Reading until the end of the season could offer him the chance to impress.
Adeboyejo began his career at Leyton Orient, before spells with Barnsley and Burton Albion, alongside loan stints at Bristol Rovers and Cambridge United. His standout form at Burton — 11 goals in 26 games during the first half of the 2022-23 season — earned him his move to Bolton.
But it has never fully clicked. Adeboyejo will leave Wanderers having scored 17 goals in 99 appearances — a return that falls short for a promotion-chasing side. A fresh start now beckons.
