EXCLUSIVE: Rotherham Want Welch On Loan

The Lower Tiers understands that Rotherham United are wanting to bring in Everton’s Reece Welch on a season-long loan.

The centre-back is looking to gain some more valuable first-team experience in English football. Everton seem keen to make this happen as they can’t guarantee any first team minutes for the 21-year-old.

The former England youth international could be a free agent next summer as his contract at The Toffees is due to expire. So a loan move will present a fantastic opportunity for Welch to showcase his talent and solidity at the back this season.

If Reece Welch is released, then it won’t be easy for him to say goodbye. He’s been there since he was just 7-years-old and made two appearances in all competitions for the club. One in the League Cup and one in the FA Cup.

About Reece Welch

The sky was the limit for Reece Welch at Everton. He was regularly involved in first-team matchday squads during the 2021/22 and was handed a new four-year contract at the start of the next season which demonstrated how highly the club thought of him. Bare in mind that he was just 19-years-old at the time.

The next step in his development was to go out on loan and gain experience of first-team football. Forest Green Rovers snapped him up in the 2022/23 season on a season-long loan deal.

Things started well for the 6’6″ centre back as he was involved from the start of the season. However, Welch began to fall out of favour, playing for just nine minutes in his last six matches for Forest Green, Everton decided to recall him with a plan to send him out on loan to another club which never materialised.

Since then, Reece Welch’s career has began to tail off slightly but it’s through no fault of his own. He was loaned out to Belgian side KMSK Deinze at the start of the 2024/25 season. But after only making 2 appearances for the team, the club was declared bankrupt and ceased operations.

League One would be a good destination for Reece Welch. He’ll have matured since his last loan move in English football and is now ready for his next challenge.
