Rob Apter – Good Or Bad For Charlton Athletic?

Charlton Athletic have announced the signing of right-winger Rob Apter, who joins the club on a permanent basis.

Apter, 22, played his football at Blackpool last season, where he was able to score eight goals. He was also able to assist on three occasions.

In his spell at the Seasiders in the 2020-21 season, the Scottish international made 132 appearances but these weren’t in the Blackpool squad for the majority. Instead, he spent the majority of his time out on loan at clubs such as Tranmere Rovers, Scunthorpe United, and Chester. During this period, he scored on 27 occasions.

A Crucial Summer Window For Charlton Athletic

Apter joins Charlton in a crucial summer transfer window with the right-winger becoming the seventh signing of the Addicks’ summer transfer window.

The Valley outfit will be aiming to consolidate in the EFL Championship after being promoted through the playoffs last season.

During this campaign, the Addicks lost academy graduate and attacker, Miles Leaburn to an injury, so they had to rely on other players in the team to step up and bring the goals, which could be argued led to the side struggling to score goals on occasions.

The addition of Apter, who holds experience in most leagues within the EFL, will add strength, depth, and most importantly, goals to the Athletic frontline.

What Qualities Does Rob Apter Bring?

The addition of Rob Apter to Charlton adds quality to the side. However, there are some areas where the former Blackpool man excels.

One of these areas is in possession. During the 2024-25 season, the former Tranmere Rovers loanee completed 56 successful dribbles, as well as creating 50 chances with him assisting three times. This shows that the 22-year-old can impress and affect football games positively, even in a Blackpool side that just missed out on the playoffs.

However, one thing in possession that Apter needs to work on is passing accuracy. During the 24/25 campaign, he only had a 75.8% passing accuracy and a 42.5% long ball accuracy. This could be a problem as long balls are heavily a part of Charlton’s gameplay, as it is direct.

But, from a defensive perspective, the striker’s statistics were impressive in a Blackpool side. He won 157 duels and completed 31 successful tackles. This shows that Apter is a hard worker off the ball and that he will put in the yards to win back possession for his side.

A Good Signing?

The signing of Rob Apter has the potential to be excellent. He brings previous experience in the EFL Championship, great skills, and knows how to hit the back of the net.

However, with his passing accuracy and his long ball accuracy, could he be successful in a Nathan Jones side? Comment your thoughts on this topic below.
