Reading has strengthened its defensive options with the loan signing of Ryan Nyambe from Derby County until the end of the 2025/26 season.

The 28-year-old Namibian international brings a wealth of experience to the Royals, having featured in over 200 senior matches across Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, and Derby County.

A versatile defender, Nyambe is comfortable across the backline but predominantly plays at right-back, providing both defensive solidity and flexibility for Reading’s squad.

His combination of pace, athleticism, and defensive intelligence allows him to contribute both defensively and going forward, making him an asset in a team looking to maintain consistency at the back while also supporting attacking moves.

Nyambe’s arrival also marks a reunion with manager Leam Richardson, under whom he played at Wigan during the 2022/23 season.

The pair will hope to replicate past success as Reading aim to strengthen their promotion push in Sky Bet League One.

Having worked together previously, Ryan Nyambe already understands Richardson’s expectations and style of play, which should allow him to integrate quickly into the squad.

A key part of Derby’s promotion-winning campaign in 2023, Nyambe made 21 appearances in all competitions as the Rams returned to the Championship.

He has also represented Namibia 17 times at international level, bringing a wealth of experience in high-pressure matches at both domestic and international levels.

Nyambe’s experience at Championship and League One levels gives him an invaluable perspective, particularly in helping younger players navigate the physical and tactical demands of the league.

What Nyambe Will Bring to Reading

Ryan Nyambe arrives at Reading with a wealth of experience, versatility, and professionalism that could prove vital as the Royals push for success in League One.

Having featured in over 200 senior matches across Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, and Derby County, Ryan Nyambe brings an understanding of what it takes to compete at both League One and Championship level.

He has been part of multiple promotion-winning squads, including Blackburn in 2018 and Derby in 2023, giving him firsthand knowledge of the demands and pressures of a promotion campaign.

Predominantly a right-back, Nyambe is also capable of playing across the defensive line, offering manager Leam Richardson valuable tactical flexibility.

His ability to adapt to different defensive roles ensures Reading can rotate or adjust formations without sacrificing quality at the back.

Beyond his on-field contributions, Nyambe is a proven professional whose leadership and character make him a positive influence in the dressing room.

He brings guidance for younger players, helping them settle into senior football, and adds a calming presence during high-pressure moments.

Combined, Nyambe’s experience, adaptability, and leadership provide Reading with a reliable, high-quality option in defence someone capable of strengthening the squad and helping the club achieve its objectives this season.

With his combination of technical ability, physical presence, and mental resilience, Nyambe has the potential to make an immediate impact for the Royals.

Manager’s Comments

Leam Richardson said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Ryan to the club. First and foremost, he’s a great guy and a real character to have around the group.

“He knows exactly what it takes to get out of League One and has hundreds of matches of experience at both League One and Championship level. Ryan brings quality, versatility and real professionalism, and he’ll add valuable depth to the back line for the remainder of the season.”

Nyambe is eligible to make his debut for Reading against Barnsley on Saturday, pending EFL ratification.
