On Tuesday 24th June, Peterborough United and their owner Darragh MacAnthony announced the signing of Stockport County centre-back Sam Hughes on a three year contract.
Both Peterborough players and the Posh fan base are already familiar with Hughes as he spent the second half of last season on loan at Posh. Furthermore, when Hector Kyprianou was not on the pitch, Hughes even stepped in to captain the side.
The experienced defender has previously played for clubs such as Chester FC and Burton Albion where he made positive impacts for each club. He was even able to score nine goals across his four seasons for The Brewers.
What Does This Move Mean For Hughes And Posh?
Hughes’ three year contract will see the defender playing at London Road until the end of the 2028/29 season.
For Hughes, this move offers a return to familarity considering he was at Peterborough in the second half of last season. Furthermore, it arguably offers Hughes consistent playing time. This will help him to develop his defensive skills and become an even better defender than he is right now.
For Peterborough, this move means the London Road outfit are getting an experienced defender. This is due to Hughes’ experience in EFL League One with several clubs.
Furthermore, the move means that they are getting a defender who is good at dueling and passing. This is because the Englishman was able to win 69.6% of his duels and 72.9% of his aerial duels last season. This qualities offer Posh reassurance and strength at the heart of their defence.
As well as this, with a 84.2% passing accuracy, the EFL League One side are getting a player who can execute the simple steps of being a defender well.
This arguably offers Posh a well-cultured and nicely well-rounded defender for the 2025-26 season.
Are Peterborough United Fans Happy With The Move?
If we were to provide you with a short answer, it would simply be yes. Most Posh fans are delighted to see Hughes back at London Road. Many fans can also be seen asking for the 28 year old to be given the captains’ armband for the upcoming season.
In his last spell with the club, the Englishman’s passion and experience within a struggling Peterborough United team arguably earnt him the respect and love of many fans.
This respect and love has been replicated in large forms through the announcement of Hughes’ return.
A Look Into The Future
This move creates many questions with some Peterborough fans looking towards the future instead of staying in the present.
However, nobody truly knows what will happen. But, it can be argued that Hughes has his eyes set on promotion with the club and can see the potential of the club and its immense talent.
As for Hughes, he arguably has a few years left in him and may even be playing EFL Championship football soon. Whether that’s with Posh or not is undecided just yet.
