John Eustace Eyes January Reunion With Former Player

Derby County are eyeing a former player in a potential January move, reuniting him with manager John Eustace.

Derby County are reportedly eyeing Ipswich Town playmaker Sammie Szmodics in what could be one of the Championship’s most intriguing January moves.

The 30-year-old, who won the Golden Boot in 2023/24 under John Eustace at Blackburn, could reunite with the manager who knows exactly how to get the best out of him.

It has been a frustrating season for Szmodics at Ipswich.

Limited to just 14 appearances and side-lined recently with illness and a knee problem, the versatile attacker has struggled to hit top form.

But at Derby, under Eustace’s guidance, he could be set for a career revival providing creativity, goals, and experience where the Rams need it most.

Eustace has already been active this season, bringing in 13 new faces, including USMNT forward Patrick Agyemang and Bundesliga recruit Oscar Fraulo.

Several of his signings, such as defender Dion Sanderson, have previously played under him, reinforcing the idea that Eustace likes familiar, trusted players and Szmodics fits that profile perfectly.

Why Szmodics Could Be Derby’s Game-Changer

The attacking midfielder offers dynamism, versatility, and an eye for goal.

He can operate across midfield and forward lines, link play, unlock defences, and provide an extra scoring threat.

In Eustace’s squad, he would slot in seamlessly, offering rotation options without disturbing the balance, while also bringing leadership and experience to younger players.

Simply put, Szmodics could be the missing piece in a team looking to mount a serious play-off push.

The timing may also be ideal.

Ben Brereton Diaz’s future remains uncertain, with Brazilian side Corinthians reportedly involved alongside Toronto FC, while top scorer Carlton Morris is out until at least February.

Derby could do with an injection of creativity and attacking firepower and Szmodics could deliver both.

There are hurdles, of course. Szmodics was signed for £9m by Ipswich in 2024, and the Tractor Boys may want to recoup part of that fee.

Whether they are willing to sanction a move remains to be seen, leaving Derby to navigate negotiations carefully.

If a deal is struck, it could be a major coup for Eustace and a fresh start for Szmodics, one that benefits player, club, and fans alike.

For Derby supporters, a reunion like this could inject excitement into the January window and provide a serious boost for the second half of the Championship season.
