Scunthorpe United continued their unbeaten start to life in the National League with a big away win at York City.
Scunthorpe United vs York City Match Summary
Goals from birthday boy Alfie Beestin, Oli Ewing and Tyler Sellars-Fleming sent the sell-out away crowd back home ecstatic, following stoppage time drama.
Scunthorpe United took the lead deep into first-half injury time thanks to an excellent Alfie Beestin half volley from 16 yards, which saw the sold-out away end erupt.
It came after a high ball had been nodded down into Beestin’s path by centre-back Will Evans. Beestin made no mistake – drilling it into the bottom left corner past a helpless Harrison Male.
They doubled their lead late on after Harrison Male clumsily brought down Joe Starbuck inside his area, and Oli Ewing made no mistake from the spot, passing it straight down the middle.
Ollie Pearce pulled one back for City with a smart header from inside the area five minutes into second half injury time, and the home crowd were on their feet.
However, it wasn’t to be as the Iron went straight up the other end as substitute Tyler Sellars-Fleming burst past three City defenders and placed into the bottom right corner to seal all three points for the visitors.
York were poor on the night, much to the frustration of an optimistic home crowd, but did have their chances, firstly in the ninth minute when Joe Felix dragged an effort wide from inside the area following an interchange of passes with Hiram Boateng.
Then, in the 37th minute, when left back Mark Kitching looked destined to put the hosts in the ascendancy, only to see his drilled strike cleared off the line by Iron defender Will Evans.
Later, in the 80th minute, following a goalmouth scramble, the ball looked to be trickling over the line, but Mahady somehow kept it out.
Scunthorpe had a chance themselves just before they eventually took the lead. Cal Roberts saw his well-struck effort saved by Male.
Tensions had flared in the first half, Will Evans saw yellow for a crunching challenge on Alex Newby; there were cries from the home faithful that it should have been red, as Evans had already escaped a booking moments before.
Where Does The Result Leave The Two Sides?
Following this game, Scunthorpe United sit fourth whilst York City sit in eighth.
Furthermore, York are now winless in two which has negatively impacted their table position. As well as this, City have now fallen out of the play-off places.
Meanwhile, Scunthorpe are now unbeaten in their last four and have won their last two in a row putting them into an, arguably, more comfortable position going into this weekend’s set of fixtures.
What Is Next For Both Sides?
For Scunthorpe United, a clash against Carlisle United awaits with the two sides currently sitting fourth and third respectively.
Furthermore, the last time the two sides met, Carlisle won 1-0 in a season with the Iron went onto to be relegated from the Football League.
For both sides, this clash arguably offers an opportunity to progress on their current positions, gain more points, and arguably gain more confidence.
Meanwhile, for York City, a trip to Hartlepool United awaits.
Pool are winless in two, just like York, and both sides will arguably be looking to gain confidence and form back as they strive to improve on their current league positions.
The last time the two sides met was in March with York running out 1-0 victors. With this in mind, Hartlepool may look to gain revenge – especially on their own turf.
