Bristol Rovers Chase League One Promotion Winner

Bristol Rovers are chasing the promotion winner as they look to improve in the closing months of the season.

Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers have been linked* with Rotherham defender, Sean Raggett.

The centre-back could be the Gas’ fifth signing of the January transfer window with Riley Harbottle, Kofi Balmer, Kane Thompson-Summers and Yusuf Akhamrich. However Raggett would be the fourth permanent signing of the window.

The Gas are in desperate need of strengthening the squad after losing Ruel Sotiriou and Bryant Bilongo as well as sending all five summer loanees’ back to their parent clubs.

Rovers were also linked to Dutch striker Mees Rijks with the Gasheads hoping to get the signings through the door as soon as possible.

Manager Steve Evans has been looking for some experienced heads to join the Gas, although admitted it was “difficult to get good players that will really improve us.” per Bristol Live.

Past Club Expectations

Currently at Rotherham United, the centre-back has racked up nearly 500 appearances in senior football, getting promoted twice in the process.

The 32-year-old has worked with Evans previously at Rotherham in 2024 when Evans returned to to his previous club.

Sean Raggett could be a great signing for Rovers with Balmer and Harbottle’s long throws seemingly ineffective with rovers attack not blessed with height.

Raggett has struggled for game time under Millers manager, Matt Hamshaw, with the club placed 23rd in the League One table and five points off safety.

His past two seasons in Yorkshire have been plagued with injuries, playing in only nine games in League One last season.

It’s been underwhelming spell for the Raggett who has only played 90 minutes in four league games this season being tormented with injuries, being used in all but one of their EFL trophy games.

Career

Raggett started off at Dover Athletic making 106 appearances for the Kent-based club before moving to Lincoln City, where he played a big role in their subsequent promotion and reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, becoming the first non-league club to achieve the feat in 103 years.

He then moved to Norwich where he struggled to get minutes being loaned out to Lincoln, Rotherham and Portsmouth leaving the Norfolk club at the end of his contract to join Portsmouth in 2020 after his successful loan spell.

He stayed in Portsmouth for four years helping the club regain their Championship status in 2024, scoring once in 33 appearances.

After promotion, he returned to Rotherham reuniting with Steve Evans in April 2024, a big reason the links have been made is their history together in Yorkshire.
