Sheffield United finished 3rd in the EFL Championship last season, losing in the playoff final at Wembley. Now, with a new season inevitable, the Blades will be looking to improve and go a step further in the upcoming campaign.
Ahead of their opening fixture against Bristol City on the 9th of August, I sat down with Sheffield United fan Toby Salt (@Toby_sufc on X) to talk all things Blades in a Sheffield United interview.
Before we start, I would like to thank Toby for taking part in this Sheffield United Interview. His responses were informative and aim to give you an insight into Sheffield United as a club currently.
The Sheffield United Interview
Question 1: United Finished 3rd Last Season. But, How Would You Summarize The Season?
“Overall, it was a very successful campaign, coming off the back of a completely disastrous season in the Premier League, we bounced back, and if it was not for an injury-time heartbreaking winner in the playoff final, we would be a Premier League team.”
Question 2: What Was Your Favourite Moment Of Last Season?
“It would have to be one of the steel city derby wins, but I would probably lean to the 1-0 win at Hillsborough. We haven’t done the double over Wednesday in over 20 years, so a brilliant moment for all the supporters.”
Question 3: What Would You Rate Sheffield United’s Transfer Window Out Of 10?
”So far, we haven’t really done that much business, so if the window was to end today, I would probably give it a solid 5. We have brought in some good loans like Barry and Bindon, but with still so many gaps in the team, I can’t put it above a 5. I expect more later in the window and hopefully more permanent signings that are ready to start, unlike players like Ukaki and Mihail Polendakov.”
Question 4: Who Has Been United’s Best Signing So Far?
”For me, I think Bindon and Barry are exciting signings, but I would probably sway towards Barry, he tore up League 1 in the first half of the season, and while he may have struggled at Hull in the second half, I still believe he will be able to come in and do a good job.”
Question 5: Which Area Of The Squad Do United Need To Improve The Most And Why?
”I believe the position needed the most is a Right Back, while still many positions that need filling, I feel the right back is the biggest hole in the team at the moment. We had many right-back loanees in 24/25 and still haven’t brought in a replacement that is sufficient to start.”
Question 6: Are United Prepared For Next Season?
”At the moment, I still don’t think United are fully prepared for the new season, while we have made solid signings during the window, I still don’t think our business is done at all. Loanees and departures have not been addressed as of yet, while the original playing squad is still extremely strong, I still believe we need to finish our business to be fully prepared for the upcoming season.”
Question 7: What Do You Think Of The Club Currently?
“I believe we are in a solid place at the moment, we have a new young manager that is still shaping his project and a still excellent championship squad, we may have lost Vini Souza but if we can keep the like of Hamer and Cooper we are in a decent place at the moment but on the other hand many fans have doubts around Selles and we feel the squad is not complete as of yet – so a very mixed feeling.”
Question 8: Is Ruben Selles The Right Manager For Sheffield United?
”I do, I absolutely adored Chris Wilder and thought it was extremely harsh of the board to give him the boot, but we now have an exciting manager in Ruben Selles who is able to stamp his exciting tactics on the club and potentially help us reach the promise land.”
Question 9: Who Is United’s Best Player Currently?
“This is a tough one, while Hamer is the obvious option, we still have many excellent players in the likes of Michael Cooper and Harrison Burrows, but I would probably have to say Gus, even though it is very close between him and Cooper. Gus ran the show for us in 24/25, and I hope he can continue that into 25/26, Gus didn’t win the championship player of the year for no reason and shows how crucial he has been to us since our relegation.”
Question 10: What Is Your Prediction For How Sheffield United Will Do Next Season?
“At the moment, I am quite pessimistic, but it all depends on who we can bring in before the transfer window closes. If i had to predict now I would probably say a low playoff place like 5th or 6th but there is every chance if some key players leave we slip out of the playoffs but if the squad keeps intact and some good players are added I could easily see us challenging for the automatics like last season, but at the moment I would have to say 5th.”
