Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Coventry City striker Ellis Simms, who may be allowed to leave should the Sky Blues get promoted.
The English striker had successful spells at Blackpool, Hearts and Sunderland on loan from Everton before moving to Coventry for a rumoured fee of £3.5m.
Since joining the league-leaders in the summer of 2023, Simms has registered 37 goals and 8 assists in 134 appearances, with 11 of these coming this season in all competitions.
Despite featuring in 32 league games this season, the striker has only started ten of them, playing a combined 1,120 minutes – he averages 0.8 goals per 90 minutes played.
According to SportsBoom, Sheffield United are keeping a close eye on the 6ft3in striker ahead of the summer transfer window which opens on the 15th June.
With Sheffield United unlikely to reach the playoffs as it stands, they are set to be on alert if the physical striker was to be available to purchase.
Following Kieffer Moore’s departure to Wrexham in the summer under sacked manager Ruben Selles, they never replaced him with a big, physical forward – something current manager Wilder has a fondness of.
Following from Simms impact off the bench against Stoke, Lampard showed how impressed he was with his striker after forcing Tommy Simkin into a mistake which allowed Jack Rudoni to fire home a winner.
He said: “Ellis was directly involved in the goal, obviously and he got that assist from how he’s been and how he’s trained.
“Haji [Wright] is scoring at the minute and is starting more – Ellis [Simms] had his period of doing that but his attitude has been first class.
“It’s a great example for everyone.”
If The Blades were to sign Simms from Coventry City, it would possibly be the best outcome for all parties – especially with Haji Wright already ahead in the pecking order.
However – Simms may not want a move back to the Championship and could be happy to be on the bench in the Premier League for Coventry City.
