Shrewsbury Town recently sacked Michael Appleton as their manager, raising questions about who will replace him.
Shrewsbury Town sacked Michael Appleton as their first-team manager on Wednesday evening following a period that has not met the board’s expectations.
Salop, who sit 21st in League Two, are in trouble of relegation and, with Appleton now gone, fans may look for managers that could keep Town up and stabilise ahead of the summer break and next season.
This piece outlines four managers that Shrewsbury could look towards.
Currently at Boreham Wood, Luke Garrard has guided the side to third placed in the National League currently with him picking up an average of 2.1 points per game with the side.
Meanwhile, in 85 games managing Boreham, he has lost just 19 times and has lost just five times with the side in the National League so far this season.
With this in mind, a swoop for Luke Garrard could be what is needed to guide Shrewsbury away from the drop zone and towards mid-table.
Mike Williamson has his last managerial spell with Carlisle United last season. However, in this spell, he was largely unsuccessful with the Cumbrians losing 14 times in 25 games.
But, prior to this spell, the 42-year-old had been successful with MK Dons and Boreham Wood where he averaged over 1.5 points per game.
With this in mind, a move to Shrewsbury could offer Williamson the chance to prove himself again and to push Salop up the table.
Steve Cotterill is currently at Cheltenham Town with him picking up an average of 1.6 points per game.
Furthermore, in prior spells at other clubs such as Forest Green Rovers and Bristol City, he also averaged over 1.5 points per game, demonstrating his ability to maintain consistency.
However, considering he was appointed Cheltenham manager last summer, this choice is arguably one of the most ambitious out of the four.
Lee Grant was recently sacked as Huddersfield Town manager with Liam Manning coming into take-over.
During his spell with the Terriers, Grant averaged 1.6 points per game but did not deliver on the high expectations placed upon him.
Now, as a free agent, a move to Shrewsbury Town could be what is needed to regain his confidence and to provide himself. However, with Huddersfield being his only managerial position, questions could arise about his experience.
