Founded in 1885 as St Mary’s Young Men’s Association, Southampton FC—nicknamed “The Saints”—play at St Mary’s Stadium in Hampshire, which opened in 2001. They joined the Football League in 1920 and climbed to the First Division in the mid‑1960s, achieving their highest league finish of 2nd in 1983‑84. The club won the FA Cup in 1976 and have made multiple European appearances, including the 2016‑17 Europa League group stage. After winning the Championship play‑offs in 2024 to return to the Premier League, Southampton were relegated in April 2025 with several games remaining.
