The Redemption Of Adam Armstrong At Southampton

Adam Armstrong has succeeded at Southampton this season, probing the idea of the striker undergoing a redemption.

Adam Armstrong has had a sensational Championship career.

Across the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons with Blackburn Rovers, he scored 46 goals, somehow not winning a golden boot during either of them.

He then moved to Premier League Southampton where unfortunately he struggled. But when the Saints were relegated in 2023, Armstrong picked up right where he left off in the Championship.

His 37 goal contributions in 52 games, including the only goal in the playoff final guided Southampton back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

However, the Premier League would be too much once again, resulting in him being loaned back out to the second tier for the second half of the season.

Based on his previous exploits, you’d think that his new club West Bromwich Albion would go on to win the league or something.

But no. Armstong scored three goals in 16 appearances as the Baggies finished 9th.

The tough times initially continued for the Englishman back at Southampton. Despite racking up so many chances, under Will Still, Southampton just couldn’t win their games.

After beating Wrexham on the opening day, Still’s side wouldn’t pick up another league win until the end of September.

The Tonda Eckert Era At Southampton

Since sacking Still in early November, the Saints finally look like the side we all thought they would be. Tonda Eckert has guided them to 6 wins in their 8 matches, scoring 22 goals, averaging 2.75 goals a game.

Adam Armstrong himself currently leads the Championship scoring chart with 11 goals in 21 matches. He has also registered 3 assists during that time, giving him the most goal contributions in the division.

Perhaps this is the year he will finally get his golden boot.

If Southampton do get back to the Premier League this season, they’ll be desperate to better their utter humiliation from last season, during which they narrowly avoided achieving the lowest points total in Premier League history.
