Southampton’s Ronnie Edwards Set For Permanent Switch

Ronnie Edwards is set to join a fellow Championship team on a permanent basis as the defender leaves Tonda Eckert’s Southampton.

Southampton

According to West London Sport, Queens Park Rangers have agreed a £4.5m deal to re-sign centre back Ronnie Edwards from Southampton.

Edwards signed for QPR last January in a loan move that saw him quickly become a fan favourite.

Take a look below at the main talking points as Saints prepare to part ways with the 22-year-old.

Saints Make Profit

Southampton signed Ronnie Edwards from Peterborough United in July 2024 for a reported £3m as the Saints looked to bolster their backline ahead of the Premier League season.

Although the centre backs time has been short at Saints, the club will still be gaining at least a £1.5m profit.

Edwards arrived at the club with enormous backing from League One, so seeing Saints make a small amount of profit is undoubtedly a disappointment for all parties.

It is unclear at this stage whether there will be any performance related bonuses or a sell on clause included in the deal.

Should Ronnie Edwards Have Had More Chances?

Saints fans will argue the case that Edwards was unfairly limited for game time.

Coming off the back of a terrific first spell at QPR, it seemed a no brainer that Edwards would be utilised for Southampton’s promotion push.

However, things did not go as planned for the Englishman, as he has made only 11 Championship appearances this season, with mangers Will Still and Tonda Eckert preferring players such as Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jack Stephens.

Southampton’s defending this season have not flattered them at all, and it reinforces the question of why Edwards was frozen out of the Southampton team?

Could Southampton Replace Him This Window?

With Edwards set to join QPR, it leaves Southampton with one less defensive player in the ranks.

Ronnie Edwards could be replaced by Danilo Doekhi, who we have suggested could be a good fit in Southampton’s system.

It looks like the sensible option to replace Edwards, and Doekhi could do that, as well as providing competition to the first team, which perhaps was not offered by the departing Ronnie Edwards.

However, Saints have recently recalled Joachim Kayi-Sanda from loan, which could explain the decision to let Edwards leave.
