Swansea City’s Worrying Away Form Continues

Following Swansea City’s defeat under the lights on Friday night to Wrexham, Vitor Matos‘s side yet again fail to pick up points away from the Swansea.com stadium where their home form has been impeccable.

This follows an impressive midweek display away from home at Fratton Park, where a dominant first-half performance from the Swans saw them leave with all three points.

Two first half goals from Galbraith and Key and a tireless performance left fans believing a new chapter had started.

Under Matos, Swansea have played away from home on eleven occasions, losing eight and winning three.

Whilst it is important to remember that the majority of Swansea’s losses, barring Ipswich, have been tight games and decided by one goal on five occasions, its hard not to wonder how well Swansea could be doing if their away form had picked up.

Swansea City’s Away Form Under Matos

Vitor Matos’s first away game for Swansea saw his men lead by two in the first thirteen minutes, which included Zan Vipotnik scoring inside just 12 seconds.

Ultimately, this was followed by the Swans’ lack of confidence prevailing as a second-half collapse saw West Bromwich Albion leave the Hawthorns with three points.

Swansea’s following two away games at Stoke City and Coventry City were close games where they felt they deserved a point from both of them.

The Swans closed out the year with a 1-0 win away at Oxford United where a Vipotnik goal handed Matos his first away three points.

Swansea travelled to The Den, where a late goal handed Millwall the deserved victory after a Lawrence Vigouroux masterclass in goal to keep Swansea in it until the end.

Next, Matos side lost away at Hull City where following two golden chances squandered and a cheap penalty given away. A rare away win came as Swansea were clinical away at a struggling Watford.

Two lacklustre performances away to Derby County and Ipswich Town saw Swansea concede five and score none, but bounced back and won convincingly away at Fratton Park last Tuesday.

Defeat at Wrexham

Following the performance three days prior, 1200 fans travelled to North Wales with hope for back-to-back away wins.

The eleven featured very little rotation from the Tuesday night fixture – Stamenic and Nunes both back in, but despite being the dominant team with high energy pressing, they squandered two big chances.

These missed chances would prove deadly for Matos’s men, with Broadhead finishing to give Wrexham the lead. A tired second-half performance saw Swansea not create much, but they did dominate the ball.

Franco may feel hard done by as his legitimate shout for a penalty was waved away. The home team sealed all three points with a well worked set piece in the dying stages of the match.

Whats Next For Swansea City?

Swansea close the season with trips away at Sheffield United, Leicester City, QPR and Norwich City, where they will be hopeful for points. One of their main problems has been their away struggles.

The Slovenian striker has only netted four away goals all season and none in 2026. With Vipotnik netting 39% of Swansea’s Championship goals, Matos will surely be asking for others to step up.

Matos has addressed this problem as Galbraith’s inclusion back into the midfield with Key at right back saw the pair score against Portsmouth.

However, Swansea really need their wingers to step up. Ronald has scored three goals this season, the most out of any Swansea winger. On the opposing flank, Eom has scored a singular goal this season.

Swansea’s injured summer signing, Inoussa, and January Brentford loanee Nunes are both yet to score this season with the next best scorer after Vipotnik being Cullen.

The attacking midfielder has managed five goals this season. With Swansea currently sitting 21st in the away table, Matos will be hoping for a stronger finish to the end of the season.
